CHAPTER 4 – The Secret Vault That Changed Ethan's Name Forever

Red and blue lights flashed across the rain-soaked highway.
Police cars surrounded the gas station from every direction.
Helicopters circled overhead.
Loudspeakers echoed through the storm.
"Richard Carter! Drop your weapon and surrender immediately!"
Richard slowly raised both hands.
"I don't have much time."
He looked at Ethan one last time.
"Whatever happens... don't trust anyone wearing a badge."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"What?"
Before Richard could explain, a sniper's laser landed on his chest.
Three red dots.
Then five.
Daniel smiled calmly.
"It ends tonight."
Richard suddenly shoved Ethan behind an overturned pickup truck.
A deafening crack split the air.
One shot.
Richard staggered backward.
Blood spread across his shirt.
"No!" Ethan screamed.
His mother fired twice toward the hillside where the sniper was hiding.
The mysterious bikers exploded into action, using their motorcycles as cover while bullets tore through the gas station.
Glass shattered everywhere.
Cars erupted with blaring alarms.
Smoke filled the parking lot.
In the chaos, Richard grabbed Ethan's jacket with surprising strength.
"Listen carefully."
His voice was weak.
"There isn't just one flash drive."
Ethan froze.
"What do you mean?"
Richard coughed, blood staining his lips.
"The drive only unlocks the vault."
"What vault?"
Richard reached into his boot and pulled out an old brass coin engraved with a strange symbol—a wolf inside a circle.
"Federal Reserve Storage."
"Vault 914."
"They'll never find it without this."
Ethan stared at the coin.
"What is inside?"
Richard smiled sadly.
"Enough evidence to destroy senators..."
"...judges..."
"...corporate billionaires..."
"...and every person who helped Daniel build his empire."
Ethan's breathing stopped.
"This was never about stolen money."
Richard nodded.
"It was about controlling the people who control America."
Suddenly, Daniel's voice echoed across the parking lot.
"Enough!"
He slowly walked toward them, completely fearless despite the gunfire.
"You always were sentimental, Richard."
Daniel looked directly at Ethan.
"Do you know why I raised you?"
Ethan said nothing.
Daniel smiled.
"Because I needed the last Carter alive."
"The vault won't open for anyone except a direct blood descendant."
Ethan's heart nearly stopped.
Daniel had never loved him.
He had never protected him.
He had simply been waiting...
For Ethan to grow up.
To become the living key.
Daniel held up a small tablet.
A satellite image appeared on the screen.
Vault 914.
The building was already surrounded by armed mercenaries.
"They're waiting for us," Daniel said.
"You have exactly twenty-four hours to open that vault."
"And if you refuse..."
He pressed another button.
Dozens of photographs appeared.
Ethan's coworkers.
His neighbors.
His best friend.
Every person he had spoken to during the last year.
"They all die."
The rain suddenly stopped.
Silence covered the battlefield.
Richard closed his eyes.
"I tried to keep you away from this life."
He placed the brass coin into Ethan's shaking hand.
"But now..."
"...you're the only person who can finish what your mother and I started."
Just then, another gunshot echoed through the darkness.
Richard's body went completely still.
The brass coin slipped from his hand.
Ethan caught it before it hit the ground.
His father was gone.
Daniel smiled.
"Welcome to the Carter legacy."
Ethan slowly stood, tears mixing with rain on his face.
For twenty-five years, he had searched for his father.
May you like
Now he had inherited his father's war.
