CHAPTER 4 — "The Brother Who Came Back from the Dead"

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Every guest stared at the elderly man standing beneath the crystal chandelier.

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

"...David?"

The man smiled sadly.

"It took you long enough to recognize your own brother."

A champagne glass slipped from someone's hand and shattered across the marble floor.

It sounded like a gunshot.

Sixteen years of lies...

Twenty years of secrets...

Everything Ethan believed about his family was unraveling in a single night.

"No..." Ethan whispered. "You died."

David slowly removed his gloves.

Across both wrists were deep scars.

"They wanted everyone to believe that."

Victoria's confidence vanished.

"You weren't supposed to come back," she muttered.

David looked directly at her.

"I almost didn't."

Police officers instinctively moved closer.

One detective asked quietly,

"Sir... who are you?"

David reached into his coat and handed over an old passport, hospital records, and several faded photographs.

"I am David Carter."

"The man who survived the accident your investigation never questioned."

The detective's eyes widened.

The documents appeared authentic.

Reporters surged forward.

Camera flashes lit the ballroom like lightning.

David turned to Ethan.

"That night wasn't an accident."

"It was an execution."

A murmur swept through the crowd.

"My brakes were cut before I left the estate," David continued.

"I barely survived when my car plunged into the river."

"I spent months in a coma."

"When I finally woke up..."

"...everyone already believed I was dead."

Ethan struggled to speak.

"But... why didn't you come home?"

David's face hardened.

"Because someone came to the hospital to finish the job."

His eyes slowly shifted toward Victoria.

"She wasn't alone."

Victoria shook her head violently.

"He's lying!"

David ignored her.

"I escaped under another name."

"I spent years gathering evidence."

"I couldn't return until I knew who ordered the attack."

The detective frowned.

"And did you find out?"

David nodded.

"Yes."

He pulled a thick folder from his leather briefcase.

Inside were bank transfers...

Private security contracts...

Hidden surveillance photos...

And one signed agreement.

The signature at the bottom froze Ethan's blood.

It wasn't Victoria's.

It belonged to his late father...

Richard Carter.

Ethan staggered backward.

"My father?"

David nodded slowly.

"Our father believed only one son deserved the Carter empire."

"He chose you."

"And ordered my death."

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Guests cried.

Executives argued.

Investors rushed outside to call emergency meetings.

The Carter empire was collapsing before sunrise.

But David wasn't finished.

He reached into the briefcase one final time.

This time...

He removed an old VHS tape.

"I've protected this for twenty years."

"It's security footage from the night Emily disappeared."

Victoria suddenly screamed.

"NO!"

She lunged toward David.

An officer tackled her to the floor before she could reach him.

Still struggling against the handcuffs, Victoria shouted,

"You don't understand!"

"If he watches that tape..."

"...he'll discover who really kidnapped Emily."

David looked at Ethan with tears in his eyes.

"I've never had the courage to watch it."

"You should."

Ethan's hands trembled as he accepted the tape.

Every person in the ballroom knew the answer to sixteen years of mystery was hidden inside.

But none of them were prepared for what the recording would reveal.

Because the man seen forcing Emily into the black SUV...

...was neither Richard Carter...

...nor Victoria.

It was someone the entire Carter family had trusted every single day.

Ethan's personal bodyguard.

And standing beside him...

...holding the car door open with a smile...

May you like

...was Ethan's own mother.
