CHAPTER 5 — "The Video They Tried to Erase"

The ballroom was transformed into an evidence room.

No one spoke.

No one dared to leave.

A dusty VHS player was brought from the hotel's storage room. Every eye remained fixed on the old television as David carefully inserted the tape.

The screen flickered.

Static.

Then...

A timestamp appeared.

October 18... Sixteen Years Ago.

The footage showed the Carter family estate under heavy rain.

Emily walked toward the front gate, clutching one hand over her pregnant belly. She looked terrified, constantly glancing over her shoulder.

Ethan felt his heart stop.

"She was pregnant..." he whispered.

David nodded silently.

The next few seconds changed everything.

A black SUV rolled slowly through the gates.

Ethan's trusted bodyguard, Michael Ross, stepped out first.

He spoke calmly to Emily, pretending everything was under control.

Emily hesitated.

Then she tried to run.

Michael grabbed her arm.

She fought back with surprising strength.

Suddenly, another figure stepped into view.

A woman.

Elegant.

Calm.

Wearing a white coat.

Ethan closed his eyes in disbelief.

His own mother.

Elizabeth Carter.

The ballroom erupted in horrified gasps.

Elizabeth gently stroked Emily's hair as if comforting her.

Then she leaned close enough for the hidden security microphone to capture every word.

"Don't worry, dear... you'll never see Ethan again."

Emily screamed.

"No! He has to know about our baby!"

Elizabeth smiled.

"He never will."

The bodyguards forced Emily into the SUV.

The vehicle disappeared into the darkness.

The recording ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then...

A slow clap echoed through the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

Elizabeth Carter herself walked through the entrance.

Eighty years old.

Perfectly dressed.

Not frightened.

Not ashamed.

She looked at the television and smiled.

"So..."

"I suppose the truth finally caught up with me."

Police officers immediately surrounded her.

The lead detective stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, you're under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice."

Elizabeth laughed.

A cold, chilling laugh that sent goosebumps through the room.

"You think I kidnapped Emily?"

She looked directly at Noah.

"Oh, sweet boy..."

"You still don't know who your mother really was."

Noah's face turned pale.

"What are you talking about?"

Elizabeth reached into her handbag.

The officers pointed their weapons.

Slowly...

She pulled out an old photograph.

One no one had ever seen before.

It showed a much younger Emily...

Standing beside Elizabeth...

Holding hands...

Both smiling.

On the back of the photo were six handwritten words.

"Mother and daughter. Summer of 1998."

The room exploded.

Ethan stared at the picture in horror.

"What..."

His voice cracked.

"...Emily was your daughter?"

Elizabeth's smile disappeared.

"No."

She looked at Noah with tears filling her eyes.

"Emily wasn't just my daughter..."

"She was the child I abandoned."

The ballroom fell into stunned silence.

Noah's knees nearly gave out.

His entire life had been built on one heartbreaking question—

Who was his mother?

Now he had a far more terrifying one.

Why had his own grandmother destroyed her daughter's life?

Before anyone could ask another question...

A detective rushed into the ballroom.

"Sir!"

"We've just searched Elizabeth Carter's private estate."

"What did you find?"

The detective swallowed hard.

"A hidden underground room..."

He paused.

May you like

"...and someone is still alive down there."
