Chapter 1: The Six-Word Trap
The silence in Room 203 was deafening.
"You're already their father," Sylvie repeated, her voice cracking but steady.
Damon stared at the two tiny infants. His mind, usually a hyper-efficient supercomputer capable of tracking millions in market shifts, completely short-circuited. "That’s impossible," he growled, stepping closer to the bed, his soaked custom coat dripping onto the linoleum floor. "We haven't been together in seven months, Sylvie. We signed the papers eight months ago. The math doesn't work. Who do you think you're playing?"
Sylvie didn't flinch. She gently adjusted the blanket around the baby girl with the tiny wrinkle between her brows—the exact wrinkle Damon had when he was thinking. "They were born at twenty-six weeks, Damon. They are severely premature. They’ve been fighting for their lives in the NICU for the last two months under a different name. I only brought them to this recovery room today because they are finally stable."
Damon’s heart hammered against his ribs. Twenty-six weeks. He did the math. The conception date lined up perfectly with their final, desperate week together before the lawyers tore them apart.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Damon’s voice shook with a dangerous mixture of rage and profound heartbreak. "I am a billionaire, Sylvie! I could have brought the best doctors in the world! Why hide them from me?!"
"Because if I told you, they wouldn't have survived," Sylvie whispered, a single tear finally escaping her eye. She looked toward the hospital door, terror flashing in her expression. "Look at their medical charts, Damon. Look at who authorized their premature delivery."
Damon snatched the clipboard from the foot of the bed. He scanned the medical jargon until his eyes locked onto the signature at the bottom of the emergency C-section authorization form from two months ago.
