Chapter 5 - SURROUNDED IN THE FOG

"GET DOWN!" Ethan yelled, tackling Clara to the floor just as a hail of silenced gunfire shattered the glass windows.

THWIP-THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!

Wood splinters exploded into the air. Picture frames shattered, glass raining down on the floorboards.

Buddy didn't panic. Instinct took over. The old dog stayed low to the ground, pulling Clara by her coat sleeve toward the kitchen island, away from the line of fire.

"They're not police!" Ethan hissed, crawling behind the heavy stone fireplace. "It’s Aegis! They came for the map!"

Outside, a harsh, synthesized voice boomed through a megaphone:

"Ethan Wallace! Clara Wallace! You have five seconds to toss the steel box out the front door! If you refuse, we level the cabin with you inside!"

"We can't outrun them!" Clara sobbed, hugging Buddy’s neck as the dog growled into the dark. "They have military gear!"

"We don't need to outrun them," Ethan whispered, his eyes narrowing in the darkness. "This is Henry’s house. He built every inch of it. And he prepared for this."

Ethan reached into the dark alcove inside the fireplace. His hands felt around until he clicked a small iron lever hidden behind the iron grate.

CLACK.

A heavy section of the stone hearth shifted backward, revealing a narrow, stone stairwell leading straight down into the darkness beneath the cabin—a survival bunker Henry had built during the Cold War era.

"Go! Downstairs! NOW!" Ethan urged.

Clara scrambled down the stone steps. Buddy followed right behind her, guarding her rear.

Ethan grabbed the steel box, the map, and the vial of chemical compound, then slid into the tunnel just as heavy boots kicked open the cabin's front door.

BANG!

Mercenaries in black tactical gear burst into the living room, night-vision goggles glowing green in the dark.

"CLEAR!" one barked.

"Where are they?!" a woman's voice screamed from the porch. It was Dr. Evelyn Reed. "Search the house! Find that map or none of you get paid!"

Down in the concrete bunker, Ethan pulled the heavy iron door shut, sealing the lock.

The bunker was silent, smelling of stale dust, earth, and gun oil. Emergency red LED lights automatically flickered on, illuminating shelves lined with preserved food, shortwave radios, and an entire wall of Henry’s spare hunting gear.

On the central workbench sat a laptop—hooked up to a private, off-grid satellite connection that Henry had maintained in secret.

"Ethan, look!" Clara pointed at the monitor.

The screen lit up with an automated message, triggered by the opening of the bunker door:

[AUTOMATED SYSTEM DIRECTIVE] IF THIS FILE IS OPENED, I AM EITHER DEAD OR INCAPACITATED. THE TRUTH MUST BE BROADCAST.

Ethan’s hands flew across the keyboard. "Henry set up a dead-man's switch," he said, realization washing over him. "If he didn't enter a code every 72 hours, this system would prepare to leak all of Aegis Dynamics' illegal land grabs and poisoning reports directly to the FBI and the national press."

"Can you send it now?" Clara asked desperately.

"I need Henry's biometric key," Ethan said, his heart dropping. "A fingerprint scan from his right thumb. Without it, the file stays encrypted!"

BOOM!

The ground shook above them. The mercenaries had found the hidden door in the fireplace and were using breaching explosives to blow through the reinforced steel.

Dust rained down from the concrete ceiling.

"They’re blowing the door!" Clara screamed.

Buddy stood at the base of the stairs, his tail stiff, his teeth fully bared. He didn't flinch at the explosions. He was ready to fight to the absolute end.

"We have to get back to the hospital," Ethan said, staring at the screen. "We need Henry’s thumbprint to trigger the upload and end this once and for all!"

"How?" Clara cried. "We're trapped in a hole underground!"

Ethan pointed to a dark iron hatch at the back of the bunker labeled EMERGENCY ESCAPE - TUNNEL B.

"Henry wasn't just a hunter," Ethan smiled fiercely. "He was a prepper."
