Chapter 6 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The storm had returned with a vengeance, masking the sound of the metal hatch opening in the thick brush three hundred yards behind the burning cabin.

Ethan, Clara, and Buddy emerged into the freezing rain, watching smoke billow into the night sky as the mercenaries blew the bunker open—only to find it empty.

"Move! To the truck!" Ethan ordered.

They sprinted through the dark woods to Ethan’s old pickup truck, hidden down a dirt logging trail. Buddy leaped into the back seat, his body shivering from cold and exhaustion, but his eyes were sharp, scanning the treeline for threats.

Ethan slammed his foot on the gas. The truck roared to life, tearing down the muddy mountain roads toward Blackwood County Hospital.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, the storm had knocked out the main security grid.

Inside Henry’s ICU room, the heart monitor beeped slowly.

A solitary figure stepped out of the shadows near the window.

It was Dr. Evelyn Reed.

She wore a fresh lab coat, holding a silenced pistol in her gloved hand. Behind her stood two armed guards wearing dark raincoats.

"You really are a stubborn old man, Henry," Evelyn sneered, walking up to the bedside. "You survived the poison. You survived the coffin. But you won't survive tonight."

She raised the pistol, aiming it directly at Henry’s forehead.

"Aegis will build the mine," she whispered. "And your precious valley will burn."

GLASS SHATTERS!

The heavy double doors of the ICU room exploded inward!

A massive, golden blur slammed into the first armed guard with horrifying speed!

It was Buddy!

The dog’s jaws clamped down around the guard’s throat, tackling the 200-pound man onto the hard floor. The gun flew out of the guard's hand, skidding under the bed.

"WHAT THE—" the second guard screamed, drawing his weapon.

Ethan rushed into the room, swinging a heavy fire extinguisher with all his strength, striking the second guard straight across the jaw. The man crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

Dr. Evelyn Reed spun around, raising her gun at Ethan—

"DON'T MOVE!" Clara yelled, stepping out from behind the door holding a flare gun she had taken from the truck's emergency kit. "Put it down, or I burn this room to the ground!"

Evelyn froze, staring at the bright red flare pointed directly at her face.

Buddy backed away from the fallen guard, blood dripping from his muzzle, standing guard over Henry’s bed like an ancient guardian gargoyle.

Ethan sprinted to the bedside, pulling out the portable satellite terminal from his backpack. He grabbed Henry’s right hand—cold, but faint warmth returning to the skin—and pressed his paralyzed thumb firmly against the biometric scanner.

BEEP.

Dr. Evelyn Reed’s face went completely grey. "You... you didn't..."

Outside the hospital, the air was suddenly filled with the deafening roar of helicopter blades. Searchlights cut through the rain, illuminating the windows of the room.

Sirens blared from every direction—not local police, but blacked-out federal SUVs surrounding the hospital grounds.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!" a voice echoed through a loudspeaker outside. "Drop your weapons and step away from the patient!"

Evelyn dropped her pistol to the floor, falling to her knees in absolute defeat.

Ethan fell back against the wall, chest heaving, tears streaming down his face as he looked at Clara. "It's over. We did it."

Buddy let out a soft, tired whine. He dragged his exhausted body up onto the side of the hospital bed, resting his heavy head gently against Henry’s chest.

And then—

A soft, rough hand slowly lifted up.

Henry’s fingers twitched. He raised his weak hand, resting his fingers in the thick, wet fur of his dog's neck.

Henry’s eyes slowly fluttered open. His lips parted, his voice barely a rasping whisper through his dry throat:

"Good... boy... Buddy..."

Buddy gave one quiet, happy bark, licking his master’s cheek as tears filled the old hunter’s eyes.

💥 THE UNEXPECTED TWIST: THE FINAL SECRETThree months later.

The news had dominated every headline across the country. Aegis Dynamics was dismantled by the federal government. Dozens of executives, along with Dr. Evelyn Reed and the corrupt Father Thomas, were sentenced to life in prison for conspiracy, attempted murder, and corporate treason.

The sun shone brightly over the valley. The air was crisp, clean, and filled with the scent of pine.

Henry Wallace stood on the front porch of his fully restored cabin, a wooden cane in his hand, watching Ethan and Clara pack up a picnic basket. Beside Henry, looking healthy and proud, was Buddy, his golden coat shining in the sunlight.

"Are you sure you don't want to come to town with us, Uncle Henry?" Ethan asked, tossing his jacket into the truck. "The mayor is dedicating the new nature preserve in your name today."

Henry smiled warmly, shaking his head. "No, son. You two go represent the family. Me and Buddy have some work to do up on the ridge."

"Alright," Clara chuckled, kissing Henry on the cheek. "Don't push yourself too hard. Doctor says your heart needs rest."

After the truck drove off down the dirt driveway, Henry’s smile slowly vanished.

He turned, walking inside the cabin, his footsteps firm and steady—without using his cane at all.

He walked into his private study, closing the door behind him. Buddy followed him in, his tail wagging smoothly.

Henry reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a small, encrypted satellite phone.

He dialed a number.

It rang twice before a deep, cold voice answered on the other end:

"Is it done, Henry?"

"Aegis is destroyed," Henry said, his voice completely clear, devoid of any weakness or age. "Their stock crashed to zero. The land is now a federal reserve—completely protected from any government or corporate development."

"And the compound?" the voice asked.

Henry looked down at his desk. Sitting in a glass display case was the empty vial of Compound X-7—the very poison he had 'ingested'.

"They still believe Aegis tried to poison me," Henry said calmly, a faint, dangerous smile touching his lips. "They never suspected that I staged the entire thing. I paid Father Thomas to drop the knife. I took the paralysis agent myself. I knew Buddy’s instincts would push him to protect me and expose them to the world."

The voice on the phone chuckled softly. "You risked being buried alive, Henry. You risked your own life."

"I knew my dog," Henry said softly, leaning down to stroke Buddy’s soft head. "I knew Buddy would never let them put dirt over me. He was the only one who could make the world look closer."

Henry paused, looking out the window at the vast, green mountain valley stretching for miles.

"Aegis thought they were the predators," Henry whispered, his eyes gleaming with terrifying intelligence. "They forgot that I’ve been a hunter my entire life."

Henry clicked the phone off, snapped the SIM card in half, and tossed it into the roaring fireplace.

He looked down at the golden retriever sitting beside him.

"Come on, Buddy," Henry said with a quiet laugh. "Let's go for a walk."

May you like

Buddy barked happily, trotting out the door into the sunlight—the ultimate partner in the greatest game ever played.
