Chapter 2 - THE LOCKED SAFE IN THE BASEMENT

Headline: "Your wife's foundation is broke!" They laughed in my face until the federal marshals pulled up.The local police arrived within six minutes, but the dynamic in the room changed instantly. Ryan’s uncle was the district deputy chief, and the responding officers tried to frame the scene as a "he-said, she-said domestic disturbance."

They let paramedics take Emily to the hospital under heavy police guard, but when I demanded Ryan’s immediate arrest, Officer Miller patted Ryan on the shoulder. "We need to clear the scene, Mr. Vance. Let the husband clean up his home."

"Clean up his home?" I laughed, a dark, humorless sound. "Look at the floor! That’s physical evidence of forgery, assault, and illegal narcotics!"

"It's a chaotic scene, sir," Officer Miller insisted. "We'll take statements at the station tomorrow."

They were buying Ryan time to destroy the paper trail. I knew how the Mercers worked. They owned half the city’s commercial real estate, but what the public didn't know was that their firm, Mercer Holdings, was secretly choking under $80 million in toxic debt. They needed Clara’s foundation money to clear their leverage before the quarterly audit next week.

I didn't leave the premises. I sat in my truck parked directly across the street from the Mercer estate. At 2:15 AM, the floodlights in the Mercer basement flickered on. Through the narrow ground-level windows, I saw Ryan and Linda carrying heavy black trash bags down the stairs.

They were burning documents.

My phone buzzed. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number:

"Check Clara’s old jewelry box in your attic. Key code 0412. Don't go back to the hospital. Emily isn't safe there."

My heart hammered against my ribs. I sped back to my house. Up in the dusty attic, I pulled down Clara’s velvet-lined wooden jewelry box. Deep in the false bottom was a silver USB drive wrapped in a note written in my late wife's distinct, elegant cursive:

May you like

"Arthur, if you are reading this, it means the Mercers took the bait. I discovered what Linda and Ryan were doing six months before I got sick. My illness wasn't an accident, Arthur. Examine the foundation's offshore accounts. Save our daughter."

My hands shook so violently I almost dropped the drive into the computer. Clara hadn't just died of cancer. The Mercers had been playing a multi-year game—and my wife had known it all along.
