Chapter 3 - THE DOUBLE AGENT

Headline: "She died of illness," they claimed. Then her medical records revealed the deadliest poison. The USB drive opened to reveal hundreds of bank statements, audio recordings, and medical chart scans. Clara had been secretly paying a private investigator for two years before her death.

The Mercers hadn't just embezzled from the Clara Vance Memorial Foundation; they had systematically drained $30 million by fabricating invoices for non-existent orphanages in Eastern Europe. But the most horrifying file was titled: MEDICAL_TOXICOLOGY_CLARA.PDF.

Clara hadn't died from stage IV stomach cancer. She had been continuously exposed to heavy metal poisoning—specifically thallium—mixed into her daily herbal supplements provided by Linda Mercer, who was her "best friend" for fifteen years.

They killed my wife to get to the foundation. And now, they were doing the exact same thing to my daughter.

I grabbed my coat and drove straight to St. Jude Hospital where Emily was admitted. As I rounded the corner to her floor, I spotted two men in dark suits standing outside her room. They weren't police officers.

Inside the glass window of Room 408, a nurse was preparing an IV drip. Beside her stood Linda Mercer, whispering instructions into her ear and handing her a small, unlabelled vial.

"Get away from her!" I roared, throwing my weight against the heavy wooden doors.

The suit-clad guards stepped into my path, but I grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall and slammed it into the first man’s sternum. He collapsed, gasping for air. The second guard reached for a concealed holster, but a loud CLICK echoed down the hallway.

"Freeze! Federal Agents!"

Four FBI agents rushed out of the stairwell, weapons drawn. Standing behind them was a woman in a grey trench coat—Dr. Evelyn Reed, the lead investigator for the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

"Arthur Vance?" Dr. Reed called out. "Put the extinguisher down. We’ve been tracking the Mercer family's wire transfers to Swiss accounts for nine months. Your broadcast tonight gave us the emergency warrant we needed."

Linda stepped out of Emily’s room, her face pale, holding her hands up. "This is a misunderstanding! I am just visiting my daughter-in-law!"

Dr. Reed grabbed the small vial from the nurse's hand and sealed it in an evidence bag. "Then you won't mind if state toxicology tests this batch of synthetic sedatives, Mrs. Mercer?"

Linda looked at me, her eyes filled with pure venom. "You think you won, Arthur? You have no idea how deep this goes. Your precious Clara sold you out long before she died!"
