Chapter 4 - THE TWIST IN THE WILL

Headline: "Your late wife had a secret lover," he sneered in court. Then the DNA test results were unsealed.By morning, Ryan Mercer was formally arrested for domestic assault, but his high-powered defense attorneys managed to post a $2 million cash bail within hours. By noon, the Mercers struck back with a devastating media campaign.

Ryan held a press conference outside the city courthouse, wearing a soft cardigan and looking sorrowful.

"My father-in-law, Arthur Vance, is suffering from severe dementia and trauma-induced paranoia," Ryan claimed to a swarm of reporters. "He assaulted my mother and broke into our home. Emily has been struggling with deep psychological issues since her mother's passing, and Arthur is exploiting her fragile state to gain control of the $45 million foundation for himself."

To make matters worse, Ryan’s lawyers filed an emergency petition to freeze all of Emily’s assets, submitting a signed, notarized codicil to Clara’s will that no one had ever seen before.

The document stated that if Emily were ever deemed mentally unfit, full management of the foundation—and all real estate properties—would revert to Ryan Mercer as her legal spouse.

I sat with Emily in a secure, undisclosed hospital facility. Her physical wounds were healing, but her spirit was shattered. "Dad," she whispered, tears rolling down her bruised cheeks. "Ryan told me... he said you weren't my real father. He said Mom had an affair with his father, Richard Mercer... he said we’re half-siblings."

My blood ran cold. "What?"

"That’s why he said I had to sign the papers," she sobbed. "He said if the public found out that Mom cheated with his dad, our family legacy would be destroyed, and Mom’s name would be dragged through the dirt forever."

It was a sick, twisted psychological trap designed to break Emily’s mind and force her into submission.

I picked up my phone and called Dr. Reed. "I need an expedited court order for an emergency DNA test. Between me, Emily, and the late Richard Mercer's exhumed remains if necessary."

"We don't need to exhume anything," Dr. Reed said solemnly over the line. "Arthur... you need to come to the federal building right now. We found something inside Richard Mercer’s private safety deposit box. You’re not going to believe who Emily actually is."
