Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

Headline: The whole room watched as the billionaire's mother was taken away in handcuffs. The crowd erupted into furious murmurs. Ryan's face turned ash-grey. "You’re out of your mind. Julianne had no children."
I pointed my phone at the multimedia booth at the back of the hall. Clara’s former attorney plugged in a flash drive.
Instantly, the massive LED screen behind Ryan changed. The Mercer logo vanished. In its place, giant high-definition documents appeared:
The original 1998 DNA birth certificate linking Emily Vance to Julianne Mercer.
The toxicology reports proving heavy metal poisoning in Clara Vance’s blood samples.
The hidden audio recording from Easter dinner—Ryan’s voice clearly booming: "Sign the transfer papers, Emily, or you won't live to see twenty-eight!"
Gasps echoed through the room. High-society donors pulled out their phones, frantically recording the screen.
"Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" Linda shrieked, rushing toward the AV team, but federal agents blocked her path.
Dr. Evelyn Reed stepped onto the stage with six armed U.S. Marshals.
"Ryan Mercer, Linda Mercer," Dr. Reed announced into a secondary microphone. "You are under arrest for federal financial fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder."
Ryan snapped. He grabbed a heavy glass award from the podium and lunged at Emily!
"If I don't get it, nobody does!" he screamed.
I didn't hesitate. I stepped in front of my daughter, slammed my shoulder into Ryan’s chest, and tackled him over the main stage podium. We crashed onto the hard floor below. The glass award shattered into pieces.
Ryan tried to scramble away, but two federal marshals pinned him to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping hand-cuffs onto his wrists.

Linda tried to slip through the emergency side exit, but two female officers caught her by the arms. As she was led away in hand-cuffs, she glared at me, spitting, "You ruined us! You broke up a family!"
"No, Linda," I said, wiping a trickle of blood from my lip as I stood beside Emily. "You were never a family. You were a cartel."
