Chapter 4 - RECLAIMING LILY

A billionaire builds a fortress of protection, but a mother's heart is not so easily won.The fallout from the Hale Industries Gala was global. By midnight, Claire Whitman and Victoria Hale were escorted out of the Plaza Hotel in handcuffs, facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, and child endangerment. The Hale stock took a temporary nosedive, but Ethan didn't care. He had already signed over temporary operational control to his trusted board members.

He had a much more important meeting.

Ethan drove through the night to his private, secluded coastal estate in Rhode Island. When he arrived at dawn, the sun was just breaking over the Atlantic ocean, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold.

He found Grace sitting on the wraparound porch, wrapped in a blanket, a mug of steaming coffee untouched beside her.

"Is she asleep?" Ethan asked gently, stepping onto the porch.

Grace looked up. Her eyes were red, her face weary. "She finally fell asleep an hour ago. She kept asking if the 'scary men' were going to come back." Grace looked out at the ocean. "You destroyed your family business last night. It's all over the news."

"They tried to hurt our daughter, Grace," Ethan said, sitting on the steps near her. "I would burn the entire world to the ground before I let anyone hurt either of you again."

Grace let out a bitter, watery laugh. "You talk like a protector now, Ethan. But where were you six years ago? When your mother cornered me in my apartment, showed me photos of my father's business being targeted, threatened to make sure I'd never paint again, and told me you were in on it? That you agreed I was just a temporary distraction?"

Ethan felt a physical pain in his chest. "You believed her?"

"I was twenty-three, pregnant, terrified, and your mother presented a united family front!" Grace yelled, tears spilling over her cheeks. "I ran to save my baby. I changed my name, worked three jobs, slept on studio floors, all to keep Lily safe from the Hale family monster. And now, you just step back into our lives and expect me to welcome you?"

"I don't expect anything," Ethan said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "I know I have to earn it. Every single day for the rest of my life. Just let me try."

Before Grace could answer, the screen door clicked open.

Lily stood there in oversized pajamas, clutching a plush bear. She looked at Ethan with those uncanny, beautiful gray-blue eyes. She didn't look scared this time. She walked slowly over to him and held out a small piece of paper.

It was a crayon drawing of three people standing under a giant, messy yellow sun.

"Are you my real dad?" Lily whispered.

Ethan’s breath hitched. He carefully took the drawing, treating it like the most valuable piece of art he had ever held. "Yes, Lily. I'm your dad. And I'm never, ever going away."

THE HOOK: Lily smiled, showing a tiny dimple in her left cheek—the exact same dimple Ethan had. But as Grace watched them bond, her phone vibrated in her pocket. It was a restricted number. A cold voice whispered: "You think Ethan is your savior? Ask him about Project Genesis from six years ago. Ask him what he really traded to get his CEO seat."
