Chapter 5 - The Snake in Silk

By Friday evening, the atmosphere inside the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was electrifying. Crystal chandeliers cast warm, glittering light across two hundred high-profile guests, ranging from Chicago’s top real estate moguls to corporate lawyers and city officials.

Ethan, dressed in a rented tux that he passed off as bespoke, strutted through the crowd alongside his mother, Vanessa, who was draped in a silver gown bought with my stolen funds. Chloe was right beside them, wearing a red silk dress that clearly highlighted her slight baby bump, posing as Ethan’s "exclusive PR consultant."

"Look at this place," Vanessa whispered gleefully to Ethan, taking a glass of crystal champagne from a passing waiter. "Your father-in-law must have spent his entire life savings renting this room for three hours just to impress us."

"Let the old man bankrupt himself," Ethan sneered quietly, swirling his drink. "It plays right into our hand. When I file for divorce, I'll argue that her family's financial instability forced me to take full control of all shared real estate. Look over there—that’s Arthur Pendelton, the head of City National Bank. If I play my cards right tonight, I can secure a two-million-dollar development loan using the Oakwood penthouse as collateral."

"Did you bring the signed paperwork?" Chloe asked, adjusting her diamond necklace.

"Right here in my inner pocket," Ethan smirked. "Once I show Pendelton that Emma signed over the managerial rights, the money will be wired by Monday morning."

At that moment, the brass chandeliers flickered, and the room grew quiet as the master of ceremonies stepped up to the main microphone on the raised stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the announcer's voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room. "Welcome to this extraordinary evening celebrating love, legacy, and the future of Chicago real estate. Please welcome our host—the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Apex Development, Mr. Richard Carter!"

Ethan froze. His champagne glass stopped midway to his mouth.

"Did... did he just say Richard Carter?" Vanessa stammered, her face losing a bit of its color. "The billionaire?"

From the side velvet curtains, my father stepped onto the stage. He was seventy years old, built like an iron pillar, dressed in a flawless tailored Tom Ford tuxedo. His commanding presence instantly commanded the silence of every billionaire in the room.

"What is going on?" Ethan whispered frantically, looking around. "Why is Richard Carter hosting this? Did Emma’s father surrender the hall to a corporate event?"

"Good evening, everyone," Richard Carter’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Tonight is a deeply personal night for me. For thirty years, I have built Apex Development into a empire. But my greatest achievement has always been my daughter."

Ethan’s blood ran cold. He turned his head slowly toward the back of the ballroom.

The heavy mahogany double doors swung open.

I stepped into the light.

I was no longer wearing the simple, fifty-dollar off-the-rack dress Ethan had ordered me to wear. I wore a custom, obsidian-black silk gown detailed with hand-sewn black diamonds, designed by world-renowned couturiers. My hair was swept back in an elegant, regal style, anchored by a emerald-encrusted tiara that had belonged to my mother's family for generations. Behind me walked four armed private security officers in charcoal suits, alongside Marcus Vance, the chief legal officer of Apex Development.

The room gasped. Several prominent city officials immediately bowed their heads in respectful greeting as I walked down the center aisle.

"Meet my daughter," Richard Carter announced, his voice echoing like thunder across the silent room. "Emma Victoria Carter... Vice President and sole heiress of Apex Development."
