Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The room exploded into uproar. Reporters began snapping photos rapidly, the flashes blinding Ethan and his family like lightning strikes.
"I heard everything," I said, my voice echoing through the ballroom’s sound system. "I recorded every single word."
I held up my phone, tapped the screen, and connected it directly to the ballroom's high-definition audio network.
Within seconds, Vanessa’s voice boomed from the overhead speakers, clear as crystal:
"The marriage certificate is signed. The ring is on her finger. And that apartment will belong to us soon enough... Ethan will slowly convince everyone she's unstable... Eventually she'll walk away in tears, and we'll keep the apartment."
Vanessa let out a strangled shriek and covered her face, sinking to her knees on the marble floor.
Then came Chloe’s voice from the speakers:
"Eight weeks along. Ethan took me to the private clinic in Naperville yesterday... As soon as we frame Emma for embezzlement, I’m moving into the Oakwood Hills penthouse."
Chloe went white as a sheet. Guests around her immediately backed away, looking at her with disgust and indignation.
Finally, Ethan’s own cold, arrogant voice rang out through the hall:
"She’s a nobody, Chloe. A pathetic administrative assistant... She has no connections, no influence, and no power. She is completely at our mercy."
The recording stopped.
Ethan was shaking violently, his face dripping with cold sweat. He looked around the room, desperate for a way out, but the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom were now flanked by six armed officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit.
"Ethan Vance," Detective Reynolds said, stepping forward with steel handcuffs gleaming under the chandeliers. "You, Vanessa Vance, and Chloe Bennett are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, federal wire fraud, and criminal extortion."
"Wait! No! Please, Emma!" Ethan fell to his knees, crawling toward me, grabbing at the hem of my black dress. The image of the arrogant, scheming groom was entirely gone, replaced by a sobbing, broken coward. "I was confused! My mother forced me to do it! Chloe tricked me! I love you, Emma! I've always loved you!"
"You loved my silence," I said, stepping back so his hands slid pathetically off my shoes. "You loved the idea of a powerless victim you could crush for your own greed. But you picked the wrong woman."
"Emma, please! I'm carrying his baby!" Chloe screamed as a female officer clamped handcuffs around her wrists. "You can't do this to an innocent child!"
I turned to look at Chloe, my eyes dead and calm. "Your child will grow up knowing that their mother and father are convicted felons who tried to ruin an innocent life. But don't worry—Apex Development will ensure the child receives proper medical care while you serve your sentence."

Vanessa was dragged to her feet, sobbing hysterically as her designer gown torn at the sleeve. "You monster! You ruined my son!"
"Your son ruined himself the moment he decided to trade his humanity for money he didn't earn," my father’s voice boomed from the stage as he walked down to stand beside me, placing a strong, protective arm around my shoulder. "Take them away."
