Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage Crumbles

The silence in the ballroom was deafening.

Ethan stood frozen in the middle of the floor, his face drained of all color, looking like a corpse in a tuxedo. Beside him, Vanessa dropped her champagne glass; it shattered against the marble floor, the loud CRASH ringing through the quiet room. Chloe gasped, clutching her stomach in sudden terror.

"E-Emma?" Ethan stammered, stepping forward with trembling legs as I reached the base of the stage. "What... what is this joke? Your father is a retired worker... you... you work at an office..."

I stopped three feet away from him, looking down at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt.

"I let you believe what you wanted to believe, Ethan," I said, my voice projecting clearly through the lapel microphone I was wearing. "My mother taught me to look for a man who loved me for my soul, not my fortune. So I lived simply. I drove a modest car. I waited to see who you truly were."

"Emma, darling!" Vanessa shrieked, taking a panicked step toward me with her hands outstretched. "There’s been a terrible misunderstanding! We had no idea—Ethan loves you so much! We are family!"

"Family?" I turned my gaze onto Vanessa, my voice dripping with ice. "Is that what you call a woman who sits in a bridal suite discussing how to frame her daughter-in-law for fraud and steal her home?"

The crowd erupted into shocked whispers. High-society guests began pulling out their phones, filming the interaction.

"What are you talking about?!" Ethan shouted, sweat pouring down his forehead as he tried to regain control of the room. "She's insane! Ladies and gentlemen, my wife is having a severe psychological breakdown! She's making up delusions! I have documents—"

"You mean these documents?" Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick black folder from his leather briefcase. "The managerial transfer papers for the Oakwood Hills penthouse that you forced my client to sign on her wedding night?"

"Yes!" Ethan yelled triumphantly, grabbing at the thread of hope. "She signed them! Legally, that property and its corporate asset rights are under my name! You can't touch me!"

"If you had hired a real lawyer instead of using a template from the internet, Mr. Vance," Marcus said with a razor-thin smile, "you would have realized that the document Emma signed was not a deed transfer. It was a formal, legally binding confession of debt assumption."

Marcus turned to face the crowd, raising his voice so everyone—including the reporters at the back—could hear every word.

"By signing those papers, Ethan Vance personally assumed absolute financial liability for a four-million-dollar high-interest corporate loan issued by Apex Security Holdings. Furthermore, he committed federal wire fraud by attempting to leverage property he did not own to secure illegal loans from private creditors."

Ethan’s eyes went wide with sheer horror. "No... no, that's impossible! She was under the bed! She was—"

He stopped himself dead. The entire room went dead silent.

Ethan realized what he had just admitted.

"That's right, Ethan," I whispered, taking a step closer to him. "On the night of our wedding, while you were drinking champagne downstairs, I was right underneath the bed in the bridal suite."
