Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Reign

Six months later.

The high-profile trial of The State of Illinois v. Ethan Vance, Vanessa Vance, and Chloe Bennett dominated national news headlines for weeks. With the overwhelming audio evidence, certified financial trails, and expert testimony from Apex Development’s legal team, the verdict was swift and brutal.

Ethan Vance was sentenced to fourteen years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for the first eight years. His private credit debt ballooned, forcing him to declare total bankruptcy; every single asset he had attempted to purchase—including his luxury sports car and designer watches—was seized by the state to pay restitution.

Vanessa Vance was sentenced to six years for her active role in the conspiracy and lost her suburban home to foreclosure.

Chloe Bennett received a suspended sentence due to her pregnancy but was ordered to perform two thousand hours of community service and pay heavy civil fines that would strip her of any financial stability for a decade.

As for the Oakwood Hills penthouse? I never moved in. I converted the entire four-million-dollar property into the Victoria Carter Shelter for Women, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide free legal aid, secure housing, and financial independence training for women escaping abusive and manipulative relationships.

On a crisp autumn afternoon, I stood on the roof terrace of the Apex Development headquarters, looking out over the magnificent Chicago skyline. The wind carried the chill of incoming winter, but inside me, there was only warmth and quiet peace.

My father walked out onto the terrace, holding two mugs of hot coffee. He handed one to me and leaned against the glass railing.

"You built something incredible out of that nightmare, Emma," he said quietly, looking at me with immense pride. "Your mother would have been so proud of the strength you showed."

I smiled, taking a sip of the warm coffee. "I used to think that keeping my identity secret was the only way to protect myself from fake love, Dad. But I realized I don't need to hide who I am to be safe."

"And what happens now?" he asked.

"Now," I said, turning to look at the vast expanse of the city I helped build, "I run this company. On my own terms."

My phone chimed in my pocket. It was a notification from the state prison system—an automated update confirming Ethan Vance’s official intake at the maximum-security facility downstate.

I didn't open the message. I simply swiped it away, turned my back on the ghost of my past, and walked alongside my father into the boardroom to lead the future of Apex Development.

He thought he had trapped a defenseless woman with no power.
