Chapter 5 - SHADOWS IN BELIZE

The high-end resort town of Placencia, Belize, was a paradise built for people with dirty money and clean passports.
Derek sat on the balcony of a luxury oceanfront villa, sipping a chilled glass of scotch as the sun began to set over the Caribbean Sea. He was wearing a linen shirt, designer sunglasses, and a relaxed smile.
In his mind, he had executed the perfect escape.
The house was ash. Sarah and the kid were dead—tragic collateral damage that the local authorities had already classified as a gas line failure. The Sovereign Trust had received the encrypted blueprint files he had retrieved from Sarah's safe, and his five-million-dollar debt had been wiped clean.
He was a free man.
His satellite phone buzzed on the glass table beside him.
He picked it up, expecting a confirmation text from his offshore banker.
Instead, his screen lit up with three consecutive alerts from the First Private Bank of Zurich.
ALERT: $14,250,000 TRANSFERRED OUT OF NEXUS HOLDINGS ACCOUNT. DESTINATION: FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION - CYBER CRIMES DIVISION (EVIDENCE LOCKER). SENDER NOTE ATTACHED: 'Thanks for the payout, boys. Try catching me in South America. - Derek Miller'
Derek’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the stone tiles of the balcony. The amber liquor pooled around his leather sandals.
"What... what is this?" he stammered, his face turning ghostly pale. "No. No, no, no!"
He frantically tapped at his phone screen, trying to log into the terminal, but a new message popped up on the screen, locking him out completely.
SYSTEM LOCKED. ENCRYPTION OVERRIDDEN BY USER: SARAH_M.
Derek’s heart stopped.
Sarah?
Before his brain could process the impossibility of the name, the heavy wooden door of his luxury villa was kicked inward with the force of a battering ram.
Three men in dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, flooded into the room. Behind them walked a man in a tailored grey suit—Victor Vance, the senior director of the Sovereign Trust.
Vance’s face was a mask of cold, terrifying rage.
"Derek," Vance said softly, stepping over the broken glass on the balcony. "You have five seconds to explain why fourteen million dollars of our operational capital was just transferred to the FBI with your signature attached."
"Victor! Wait!" Derek shrieked, throwing his hands in the air, dropping to his knees on the hard stone. "It wasn't me! I swear to God it wasn't me! I was hacked! Sarah—my wife—she must be—"
"Your wife is dead, Derek," Vance interrupted coldly, pointing a finger at him. "We saw the news. Her body was vaporized in the fire you insisted we set. Don't blame a ghost for your greed."
"She's not dead!" Derek screamed, tears of absolute panic streaming down his face. "She played us! She played all of us! Look at the screen! Look at the user ID!"
Vance stepped forward, picked up Derek's phone, and looked at the locked screen.
His eyes narrowed as he read the small, green text flashing at the bottom of the display:
‘If you want the real blueprints, Victor, check the basement of the house you burned down. Derek gave you fake files. - S.M.’
Vance looked up from the phone, his eyes turning into slits of ice.
He turned his head slowly to look at Derek, who was shaking uncontrollably on the ground.
"You gave us fake files?" Vance whispered.
"No! No! I gave you what was in the folder!" Derek begged, crawling backward until his back hit the balcony railing. "I didn't know! She hid them! She lied to me!"
"You brought us into a war with a woman who is smarter than you," Vance said, drawing a sleek pistol from inside his jacket. "And you wasted three weeks of our time."
"Wait! Please!" Derek sobbed. "I can find her! I know where she'd go! I know her family!"
May you like
Vance lowered the gun slightly, a cruel, calculating thought dawning in his eyes.
"You're right, Derek," Vance said softly. "You do know where she would go. And you are going to lead us right to her. If you fail... I won't kill you. I'll hand you over to the cartel bosses whose money you just donated to the federal government."
