Chapter 7 - THE UNEXPECTED TWIST

Derek screamed, diving beneath a dining booth, covering his head with his arms. Vance, blinded and disoriented, fired three wild shots into the ceiling before being tackled to the floor by four heavily armed FBI tactical officers who burst through the diner's double doors.

"SECURE THE PERIMETER! MOVE! MOVE!"

I didn't run. I sat calmly in my booth, keeping my hands visible on top of the table.

A tall woman in a dark trench coat, wearing an FBI credential badge around her neck, stepped through the shattered glass doors. She walked directly over to my booth, looking down at me with a mixture of intense scrutiny and profound respect.

"Sarah Miller?" she asked.

"Special Agent Reyes," I said, acknowledging her. "The package is secure."

Derek pulled himself out from under the booth, his face covered in dust, his eyes wide with utter confusion as he saw me talking calmly to the federal agent.

"Wait..." Derek gasped, looking between me and Agent Reyes. "What... what is this? Sarah? You... you called the FBI?"

I turned my head slowly to face him.

"I didn't just call them five minutes ago, Derek," I said, my voice dropping to a cool, lethal whisper. "I've been working with Special Agent Reyes for six months."

Derek froze. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse.

"W-What?" he stammered.

"Did you really think I was that blind?" I laughed—a dry, bitter sound that echoed through the ruined diner. "Did you really think I didn't notice the offshore transfers? The secondary phones hidden in your trunk? The strange smell of chemical accelerants on your clothes months ago?"

Agent Reyes stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.

"Three months ago, Sarah came to our field office in Philadelphia," Reyes revealed, looking down at Derek with cold contempt. "She brought us initial traces of the Sovereign Trust's laundering network. But we needed the master ledger—the one you kept locked on your encrypted server."

"So... the fire..." Derek whispered, his voice trembling. "The phone call..."

"I knew you were planning something," I said, leaning closer to him. "Lily and I were already packed. When Lily told me what she heard you say on the phone that morning, it wasn't a shock—it was the signal. We were leaving whether you set that fire or not."

"You... you used me," Derek breathed, realization finally crashing down on him like a tidal wave. "You let me think I was escaping... you let me run to Belize... just to lead the FBI directly to Victor Vance and the entire executive board of the Trust."

"You traded my life for three million dollars, Derek," I said, standing up and pulling my jacket tightly around myself. "I traded your freedom for justice. I'd say I got the better deal."

Agent Reyes grabbed Derek by his collar, yanked him to his feet, and slammed his face onto the stainless steel diner counter, snapping the cuffs tightly around his wrists.

"Derek Miller, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, arson, money laundering, and treason," Reyes read him his rights, her voice cold and unyielding.

As they dragged Derek out into the pouring rain, he looked back over his shoulder at me, tears streaming down his face, screaming my name.

"SARAH! PLEASE! SARAH, I'M SORRY! SARAH!"

I turned my back on him and walked out the side exit where Marcus was waiting in his truck, the engine idling warmly in the dark.
