Chapter 3 - Shadows of the PentagonThe plot was far bigger than a arrogant billionaire beating his wife to hide his financial crimes. The Calder family was merely the public face of a rogue faction deeply embedded within the high command of the military-industrial complex.

Within hours, high-ranking officials at the Pentagon initiated a media blackout. The federal charges against Grant and Vivienne were suddenly "delayed" due to administrative technicalities. A corrupt federal judge signed a bail release order for Preston Calder on a staggering $50 million bond.

When I stepped out of the federal courthouse, expecting to see Preston driven off in a prison transport, I saw him walking down the front steps in a tailored Italian suit, flanked by a dozen heavily armed private security guards.

He caught my eye, adjusted his silk tie, and mouthed two words: "Checkmate, General."

I marched straight to the office of General Arthur Sterling—my direct superior and a man I had served alongside in three combat tours.

"Arthur, what is the meaning of this?!" I slammed my fist onto his oak desk. "Preston Calder beat my daughter, held her hostage, and laundered millions in military funds! How is he walking the street?!"

General Sterling didn't look up from his papers. His face was drawn, dark circles under his eyes. "Stand down, Nathan. That is an order."

"An order?!" I bellowed. "My daughter is bleeding in a hospital bed!"

"If you press these charges, Nathan, people die," Sterling said, finally looking up, his voice barely a whisper. "The Calders don't just have money. They hold the kill-switches to the automated defense grids protecting three major naval bases. Someone high up—someone above my paygrade—is protecting them because if the Calders fall, they take the national security infrastructure down with them."

"Who is 'The Architect'?" I demanded.

Sterling froze, his pen hovering in mid-air. "Where did you hear that name?"

"Nadia heard Preston say it."

Sterling slowly leaned back, pulling a side drawer open and tossing a classified dossier onto the desk. "If you open that file, Nathan, you are no longer operating under the protection of the U.S. Army. You will be a rogue agent. The system will disavow you."

I grabbed the dossier without hesitation. "I was a father long before I was a General."
