Chapter 2 - THE BILLION-DOLLAR DINNER

Viral Hook: She invited the retired mechanic to her mansion to reward him. But when his ambitious daughter tried to cash in, a dark family secret was exposed.

An hour later, a fleet of black bulletproof SUVs arrived at the Monroe Estate—a sprawling, historic mansion in the elite suburbs of Chicago. Inside, the warmth of a massive roaring fireplace cut through the winter chill.

Callista sat on a velvet sofa, clutching a cup of tea that cost more than her first car, her eyes darting around the room. She was an opportunist. She had spent her life climbing the corporate ladder, and she knew this was the golden ticket. If she could convince Adelaide to invest in her firm, Whitman Logistics, she would be unstoppable.

"Dad," Callista whispered urgently, leaning over to Archie. "This is it. Talk to her about my company. She owes us."

Archie frowned, his eyes deeply disappointed. "She owes us nothing, Callista. I did what was right. If you think I'm going to beg a grieving widow for money, you don't know your own father."

"It's not begging, it's business!" Callista hissed.

"Is it business, or is it greed?" Adelaide's sharp voice cut through the room as she entered, now wearing a simple but elegant silk robe. She had heard every word.

Callista froze, her face burning. "Mrs. Monroe... I didn't mean—"

"Sit down, child," Adelaide commanded, taking a seat in a leather armchair. "I know exactly what you meant. You are like everyone else at that airport. You see people as stepping stones or obstacles. But your father... your father is a rare breed."

Adelaide signaled her butler, who brought out an old, weathered wooden box. She placed it on the table. When she opened it, it wasn't filled with diamonds or gold bars. It was filled with old blueprints, faded photographs of a young couple, and a single, heavy silver wrench.

Archie’s eyes widened as he looked at the wrench. He leaned forward, his hands trembling. "This... this is an original 1974 Boeing turbine wrench. There were only fifty of these made for master mechanics."

Adelaide smiled, a tear slipping down her wrinkled cheek. "My late husband, Thomas, wasn't born a billionaire, Archie. He started exactly where you did. He was a mechanic. We built Monroe Capital from nothing, starting in a grease-stained garage. When he died ten years ago, he told me to watch out for the people who actually keep the world moving. Today, I found you."

Callista saw her opening. "Mrs. Monroe, my father sacrificed everything for this industry. He raised me alone on a mechanic's salary. That's why I built Whitman Logistics—to honor his legacy. We are looking for an anchor investor..."

Adelaide held up a hand, silencing Callista instantly. "I don't invest in companies, corporate girl. I invest in people. Archie, I want to offer you the position of Honorary Chairman of the Board of Northstar Airways. You will have full veto power over corporate culture, employee treatment, and customer relations. Salary: three million dollars a year."

Archie gasped, clutching his chest. "Mrs. Monroe... I... I can't accept that. I'm just a retired grease monkey."

"You are exactly what my airline needs," Adelaide insisted.

But just as Archie reached out to shake her hand, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open. A man in an expensive gray suit, his hair disheveled and his eyes bloodshot, burst into the room.

"Grandmother!" the man shouted. "What is the meaning of this? You're giving a board seat to a street rat?!"

It was Julian Monroe—Adelaide’s ruthless, power-hungry grandson, and the current Managing Director of Northstar Airways. And behind him, hiding in the shadows of the hallway, was none other than Corbin Vail.
