CHAPTER 5: The Secret Ryan Took to His Grave

Ryan Carter was dead.

The news spread across every television station within minutes.

Officially, it was ruled a suicide.

Unofficially…

Nobody in the Harrington family believed it.

Emily couldn't stop staring at the screen while holding baby Hope against her chest.

Ryan had many sins.

But he wasn't the type to end his own life.

Someone had silenced him.

Three days later…

Detective Samuel Brooks returned carrying a sealed evidence box.

"I wasn't supposed to receive this," he admitted.

"It was delivered anonymously this morning."

Inside was Ryan's personal watch.

His wedding ring.

And a flash drive.

Emily's hands trembled.

Samuel connected the drive to his laptop.

A video appeared.

Ryan looked exhausted.

Bruises covered his face.

Behind him was a concrete wall.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...I'm already dead."

Emily gasped.

Ryan continued.

"They told me Emily would never find this."

"I pray they're wrong."

He closed his eyes before speaking again.

"I lied to you."

"I betrayed you."

"I destroyed our family."

"I'm guilty."

Tears rolled down Emily's cheeks.

"But there is one thing I never lied about."

His voice cracked.

"I really did fall in love with you."

The room fell silent.

Ryan lowered his head.

"My father discovered your real identity years before I met you."

"He forced me to marry you."

"The plan was simple."

"Earn your trust."

"Convince you to rewrite your inheritance."

"Then make your death look like an accident."

Emily felt sick.

Ryan continued.

"I thought I could do it."

"But when I heard our daughter's heartbeat for the first time..."

"I wanted out."

He looked straight into the camera.

"They wouldn't let me leave."

Samuel frowned.

"Who's 'they'?"

Ryan answered as if he had heard the question.

"They're called..."

The Circle.

"They're not just one family."

"They're judges."

"Politicians."

"Police officers."

"CEOs."

"They've stolen fortunes for decades."

"And Emily..."

"They've been waiting for you since the day you were born."

Ryan pulled a folded paper from inside his jacket.

"If they kill me..."

"Go to Locker 117 at Grand Central Station."

"The key is hidden where no one will ever think to look."

Suddenly—

The video shook violently.

Ryan looked toward the door.

His face filled with terror.

"They're here."

He whispered one final sentence.

"Tell Hope..."

"...her father tried to save her."

The screen went black.

Nobody in the room spoke.

Even Detective Brooks looked shaken.

Emily silently wiped away her tears.

Then the nurse rushed into the room.

"Mrs. Harrington!"

"Someone just tried to enter the maternity ward using a fake doctor's badge!"

Every security alarm in the hospital began screaming.

Doors locked automatically.

Security guards ran through the hallways.

Victoria grabbed Hope.

Samuel drew his weapon.

Then…

Every phone in the room buzzed at exactly the same second.

A single text message appeared.

"Locker 117 is a trap."

A second message arrived immediately after.

"Don't trust Detective Brooks."

Emily slowly lifted her eyes toward Samuel.

He was already staring back at her.

With a look she had never seen before.

And for the first time…

May you like

Emily realized the enemy might not be outside the room.

It might already be standing beside her.
