CHAPTER 1 – The Day He Chose Power Over His Family

No one expected the richest man in town to destroy his own family before breakfast.

The heavy oak doors of the Hawthorne Mansion echoed through the silent hallway as Eleanor dropped to her knees, wrapping both arms around her two terrified children.

"Please... don't do this," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "They've done nothing wrong."

Her six-year-old son clung to her dress, sobbing uncontrollably. His little sister buried her face in Eleanor's shoulder, too frightened to ask why their father suddenly looked at them like strangers.

Standing before them, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, was Jonathan Hawthorne—the billionaire heir everyone admired for his charm, intelligence, and generosity.

But today, there wasn't a trace of kindness left in his eyes.

"I've already made my decision," Jonathan said coldly. "You'll leave this house today."

Eleanor stared at him in disbelief.

"After twelve years together... after everything we've survived... you're throwing us away?"

Jonathan didn't answer.

Instead, another pair of footsteps echoed from the grand staircase.

A beautiful young blonde woman slowly descended, wearing Eleanor's favorite silk robe.

Victoria.

The woman Jonathan had promised was "just a business consultant."

She smiled without shame before placing one hand possessively on Jonathan's arm.

"I told you she'd make this difficult," Victoria said with a laugh. "Maybe security should help."

Eleanor's entire body froze.

"You... brought her into our home?"

Jonathan never looked away.

"This house belongs to me."

"No," Eleanor replied quietly. "It belonged to your father."

His expression hardened.

"And now it's mine."

The children began crying louder.

"Daddy..." the little boy begged. "Did we do something bad?"

Jonathan's jaw tightened.

For a split second...

...his eyes softened.

But Victoria squeezed his arm.

"They're manipulating you," she whispered.

The moment disappeared.

Jonathan turned toward the head butler.

"Escort them out."

The elderly butler didn't move.

"Sir... your father specifically instructed—"

"I gave you an order!"

Silence swallowed the room.

Finally, the old man lowered his head in heartbreak.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Hawthorne..."

Eleanor slowly stood.

She wiped away her tears.

Then looked directly into Jonathan's eyes one last time.

"You aren't becoming your father."

She paused.

"You're becoming the man he spent his whole life warning me about."

Jonathan laughed.

"My father is dead."

"Exactly."

She picked up one small backpack containing everything the children still owned.

Without another word, she walked toward the front door.

Rain poured outside.

The massive iron gates slowly opened.

The moment Eleanor stepped beyond them...

a black luxury sedan pulled into the driveway.

Every servant suddenly froze.

Even Jonathan frowned.

An elderly attorney stepped out, carrying an old leather briefcase sealed with the Hawthorne family crest.

"I apologize for arriving unannounced," the man announced.

"But I'm here to fulfill the final instruction of the late Richard Hawthorne."

Jonathan smirked.

"The inheritance was settled months ago."

The attorney slowly shook his head.

"No, Mr. Hawthorne."

"This instruction was never meant for you."

The smile vanished from Jonathan's face.

The attorney looked past him...

...straight at Eleanor standing in the rain.

He opened the weathered briefcase and carefully removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Richard Hawthorne's unmistakable handwriting, were seven chilling words:

"Only open this after Jonathan betrays you."

Eleanor's hands began to tremble.

Jonathan's face turned completely white.

Because only three people had ever known those words existed.

One of them had been dead for nearly a year.
