CHAPTER 5 – The Murder Richard Hawthorne Predicted

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Jonathan stared at the woman he had called "Mother" his entire life.

His lips trembled.

"What... did you just say?"

Margaret Hawthorne calmly removed her white gloves and looked around the mansion as if she still owned every inch of it.

"I said..."

"...Richard would still be alive if he had stopped digging."

The room erupted.

"Call the police!" Eleanor shouted.

But Margaret simply laughed.

"You still don't understand."

She slowly walked toward Richard's portrait hanging above the fireplace.

"I spent thirty years building an empire."

"Do you really think I'd let one old man destroy everything?"

Jonathan backed away in horror.

"You... you killed Dad?"

Margaret looked at him with cold amusement.

"No."

"I only gave him a choice."

She reached into her designer handbag and removed a small glass bottle.

The attorney gasped instantly.

"I know that bottle..."

"It disappeared from Richard's medical cabinet the week before he died."

Margaret smiled.

"It wasn't poison."

"It was much smarter than poison."

She explained that Richard suffered from a rare heart condition.

A doctor had prescribed medication that kept his heartbeat stable.

For months...

Margaret secretly replaced the pills with harmless vitamins.

Richard believed he was taking his medicine.

His heart slowly weakened.

Then one stressful argument...

One emotional shock...

One final betrayal...

Was all it took.

The official report said...

Natural heart failure.

No poison.

No fingerprints.

No evidence.

The perfect murder.

Jonathan collapsed into a chair.

"You let me believe I inherited everything..."

Margaret looked at him without emotion.

"You were useful."

"You signed every document I placed in front of you."

"You never asked questions."

"You were easier to control than your father."

Victoria suddenly screamed.

"You used me too!"

Margaret smiled again.

"I use everyone."

Then she turned toward Eleanor.

"But you..."

"...you were Richard's biggest mistake."

Eleanor frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The attorney quickly opened another folder from Richard's vault.

"I believe he wanted you to know this only if Margaret confessed."

Inside was an old photograph taken twenty-eight years earlier.

A young Richard Hawthorne stood beside a smiling nurse holding a newborn baby.

The nurse...

...was Eleanor's late mother.

Eleanor's hands began shaking.

"My mother worked for Richard?"

"No," the attorney whispered.

"They grew up together."

He unfolded one final handwritten letter.

"My dear Eleanor...

If you're reading this, Margaret has finally revealed herself.

There is something I could never tell you while I was alive.

You were never an employee's daughter.

You are my daughter."

The room froze.

Eleanor's knees nearly gave out.

Jonathan stared at her in disbelief.

"No..."

Richard Hawthorne had never treated Eleanor like family by accident.

He had been protecting his own daughter all along.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The trust.

The kindness.

The quiet protection.

The inheritance.

The mansion.

None of it had been charity.

It had been a father's final promise.

Margaret's face finally lost its confidence.

"You... found that letter?"

Richard had hidden Eleanor's true identity for one reason.

He knew Margaret would kill anyone standing between her and the Hawthorne fortune.

Before anyone could react...

The mansion lights suddenly went dark.

Every security monitor went black.

Outside...

More than twenty black SUVs surrounded the estate.

Armed men poured onto the property.

The head of security ran inside, bleeding from his forehead.

"They're here!"

Eleanor's heart raced.

"Who?"

The guard looked toward Margaret.

His voice shook with fear.

"The people who helped build her empire..."

"They're here to erase every witness."

Margaret slowly smiled.

"You should have opened that letter after I was dead."

The sound of automatic gunfire echoed across the front lawn.

The siege of Hawthorne Mansion had begun.
