CHAPTER 7 – "The Betrayal That Broke Everything"

Emily drove through the storm without knowing where Jonathan had gone.
The note haunted her.
"The person you trusted most has already betrayed you."
She wanted to believe it was another one of Victoria's mind games.
But deep inside...
She already knew.
Jonathan had vanished at the exact moment the lights went out.
That wasn't luck.
That was planning.
Hours later, Emily reached the abandoned lighthouse where Jonathan had secretly trained her to decode her father's files.
Everything inside had been cleaned out.
The computers.
The documents.
Even the surveillance drives.
Only one thing remained.
A chessboard.
Every piece was gone...
Except the king.
Taped beneath it was a tiny memory card.
Emily inserted it into her laptop.
Jonathan appeared on the screen.
Not frightened.
Not injured.
Smiling.
"If you're watching this, you've finally discovered the truth."
Emily's heart pounded.
"I was never your protector."
"I was your father's business partner."
"When Victoria betrayed us, I made a choice."
"I let her believe I had joined her."
Emily frowned.
"So... whose side are you on?"
Jonathan answered without hesitation.
"My own."
The video continued.
"Your father trusted people too easily."
"Ryan trusted money."
"Victoria trusted power."
"But I trusted patience."
"For thirty years, I waited."
Emily's hands shook.
"No..."
Jonathan smiled again.
"The Carter fortune?"
"I already moved it."
"Every account."
"Every trust."
"Every hidden investment."
"It belongs to me now."
Emily felt the room spinning.
Jonathan wasn't helping Victoria.
He wasn't helping Ryan.
He had been stealing from both of them.
Then the screen suddenly switched to a live security camera.
Victoria was tied to a chair.
Ryan sat beside her in handcuffs.
Emily's father was chained nearby.
The baby slept peacefully in a crib.
Jonathan stepped into view.
Holding a detonator.
"Three people destroyed your family."
"I simply waited for them to destroy each other."
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you want your daughter back..."
"Come alone."
"Midnight."
"The old Carter estate."
"And Emily..."
He smiled one last time.
"Bring the only thing I don't have."
"Your father's original will."
The screen went black.
Emily whispered,
May you like
"This was never about revenge..."
"It was always about the fortune."
