Chapter 7 - The Return of the Quiet AnalystThe next morning, the rain had completely cleared, leaving Chicago glistening under a bright, crisp autumn sky.

At Lakeview Data Systems, the atmosphere in the open-plan floor was thick with nervous tension. Employees whispered in groups around the coffee machine, wondering if the rumors were true—was the company really about to collapse? Would they all be out of a job by noon?

At exactly 8:55 AM, the glass front doors swung open.

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

Ethan Cole walked in wearing his familiar pale blue shirt, dark slacks, and the navy jacket with the patched elbow. He carried his cardboard box in one hand and a fresh cup of black coffee in the other.

Frank, the security guard, stood up from his desk and beamed, giving a crisp, respectful salute.

“Welcome back, Mr. Cole.”

“Thanks, Frank. How’s the knee?”

“Getting better every day, sir.”

Ethan walked across the shiny marble floor, past the row of empty glass offices where Derek Lawson’s nameplate had already been removed from the door, and headed straight toward his standard-issue cubicle near the back.

Nina Patel jumped up from her chair, her eyes shining with disbelief and relief.

“You’re back? Did they... did they fix it?”

“Everything is resolved, Nina,” Ethan said calmly, setting his box down on the desk. He carefully placed the framed photograph of Sarah and Lily back in its exact spot next to the small green plant.

Across the aisle, a junior developer swallowed hard and leaned over the partition. “Uh... Ethan? Word around the floor is that... well, that you’re sort of the guy who owns the whole operation.”

Ethan looked up from his monitor as it hummed back to life, the master cryptographic keys syncing automatically across seventeen corporate networks.

“My name is Ethan Cole,” he said, offering a quiet, reassuring smile. “I’m a senior operations analyst. And I really think we need to look at our spreadsheet formulas before the morning status report.”
