Chapter 9 - The Science Fair VictoryThat evening, the gymnasium at Hawthorne Elementary School was buzzing with the excited chatter of children, parents, and bubbling chemical reactions.

Rows of poster boards displayed intricate diagrams of the solar system, underwater ecosystems, and homemade electrical circuits. Right in the center row sat a papier-mâché volcano painted bright red and brown, complete with a tiny paper sign that read: The Cole Family Geological Explosion.
Lily stood proudly beside her project, wearing a purple sweater and grinning ear to ear.
Ethan stood a few feet back, holding a small digital camera, waiting for the judges to make their final rounds.
As the lead science judge—a stern-looking middle school teacher with a clipboard—approached their table, he peered down at the volcano and raised an eyebrow.
“Well, let’s see what we have here,” the teacher said. “Did you follow the exact measurement guidelines for the chemical reaction, young lady?”
“Yes, Mr. Henderson!” Lily chirped proudly. “My dad helped me measure it. He’s really good with data and spreadsheets.”
Mr. Henderson poured a small vial of vinegar into the crater.
For three seconds, nothing happened. The gym went quiet. Lily held her breath, gripping the edge of the table.
Then, with a sudden, bubbling hiss, a thick stream of foamy red lava surged over the rim, cascading down the cardboard mountain and landing neatly in the plastic catch-pan below.
The crowd of parents and students broke into applause.

Lily jumped up and down, throwing her arms around Ethan’s waist. “It worked! It didn't explode too early!”
“See?” Ethan said, hugging her tightly and kissing the top of her head, his eyes catching the reflection of the sparkling lights in the gymnasium. “Precision, patience, and the right foundation. It always works out in the end.”
