Chapter 1 - THE FOUR-DAY GAPHOOK: “She left four days ago? That’s impossible—I was only gone for a couple of hours!”

Mark’s hand slipped off Nurse Lauren’s arm as if he’d been burned. The silence in the hallway suddenly felt deafening, louder than the incessant beep of the heart monitors he had dismissed hours before.
“What do you mean, four days ago?” Mark stammered, his voice cracking. “I stepped out this afternoon! It’s Tuesday!”
Nurse Lauren looked at him with a mixture of cold pity and intense disgust. She pulled her arm back and adjusted her clipboard. “Mr. Carter, today is Saturday. You haven’t been here since Tuesday afternoon when your wife was rushed into emergency surgery.”
Mark swallowed hard, the sweet taste of white chocolate raspberry cake suddenly turning to ash in his mouth. Saturday? How could it be Saturday? He remembered stepping out of the room... then meeting Madison... then drinking champagne...
The lost days. Madison had insisted they go to her private estate in the countryside after the cake-cutting to “catch up.” She had poured drink after drink. His phone had been switched off the entire time. He thought it had only been a long, hazy night. Four days?
“Where are my children?” Mark’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. “Where is Emily? Where are Grace, Lily, and Hope?”
“The babies?” Nurse Lauren stared at him, her eyes widening slightly before she hardened her posture. “Mr. Carter, Mrs. Carter discharged herself against medical advice on Thursday. And as for the babies... you need to speak with Dr. Patel and the police.”
“The police? Why the hell would I need to speak to the police?!” Mark shouted, grabbing his head in panic.
Before Nurse Lauren could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the tiled floor. Two uniformed police officers stepped out of the elevator, flanked by Dr. Naomi Patel. Dr. Patel’s face was grim, her surgical mask dangling around her neck like a faint shadow.
“Mark Carter?” Officer Rodriguez asked, stepping forward with his hand resting on his utility belt.
“Yes! What is going on here? Where is my wife? Why did she leave without telling me?!” Mark demanded, shifting into defensive anger to cover his rising terror.
Dr. Patel crossed her arms, her voice razor-sharp. “Mrs. Carter didn’t leave without telling you, Mark. She signed the discharge papers, paid the remaining balance with her own savings, and filed a restraining order against you while she was still bleeding from her abdominal incision.”
Mark staggered back. “A... a restraining order? On what grounds?!”
“On the grounds of severe emotional abuse, medical abandonment, and reckless endangerment,” Officer Rodriguez stated calmly, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “Furthermore, Mr. Carter, we are placing you under arrest for questioning regarding the disappearance of Baby C.”
Mark’s mind went blank. “Baby... Baby C?”
“Baby C—Hope—suffered severe oxygen deprivation during the delay in surgery,” Dr. Patel said, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. “If you had answered your phone forty minutes earlier to sign the husband's emergency consent bypass, we wouldn't have had to wait for Emily to regain partial consciousness while hemorrhaging to sign it herself. Hope was transferred to a specialized neonatal ICU across state lines on Wednesday.”

“And Emily?” Mark whispered, tears finally breaking through his eyes. “Where is Emily?”
Officer Rodriguez slapped the cold metal cuff onto Mark’s wrist. “She made sure you’d never find out.”
