Chapter 7 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATIONHOOK: A coward dies a thousand deaths; a mother only fights once.

As the police dragged a screaming, hysterical Madison out of the ballroom in cuffed hands, the crowd parted.
Emily Vance-Smyth stepped into the center of the room.
She wore an elegant white gown that covered her surgical scars, standing tall, radiant, and completely unbroken. Beside her stood a team of pediatric specialists pushing a specialized twin stroller carrying Grace and Lily.
And in Emily’s arms, wrapped in a soft pink blanket, was baby Hope—breathing on her own, her tiny fingers clutching her mother’s index finger.
Mark stood between two police officers, looking at Emily and his three daughters. Tears streamed down his cheeks without stopping.
“Emily...” Mark choked out, taking a tiny step forward before the officer held him back. “They’re... they’re beautiful. Hope... she survived?”
Emily looked at the man she had once promised to love forever. There was no hatred in her eyes anymore—only a vast, empty void of indifference.
“Hope is a fighter, Mark,” Emily said softly. “She survived the poison. She survived the delay. She survived everything you and Madison threw at us.”
“Can I... can I just hold her? Once?” Mark begged, dropping to his knees on the hard floor, weeping openly. “Please, Emily. Just five seconds. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry!”
Emily looked down at him from above, her stance firm and unyielding.
“Forty minutes, Mark,” Emily said quietly, her voice ringing clearly across the silent ballroom. “I asked you for forty minutes while I was dying on that table. You gave those forty minutes to a monster and a slice of cake.”

She turned her back on him, gently adjusting Hope’s blanket over her tiny shoulders.
“You don't get five seconds.”
