Chapter 6 - THE TRAP IS SETHOOK: To catch a snake, you have to use the bait it desires most.

The atmosphere inside the grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was electric. It was the annual Vance-Global Charity Galaâan event that drew the wealthiest socialites, investors, and power brokers in the state.
Madison Vale walked through the entrance wearing a crimson silk dress, holding her head high despite her dire financial situation. She had managed to wangle an invitation through an old acquaintance, desperate to find a new wealthy target to replace Mark.
She smiled for the photographers, sipping champagne, completely unaware that every camera in the room was connected to a private feed monitored by Emilyâs team.
Suddenly, the lights in the ballroom dimmed.
The grand projector screen at the front of the roomâusually reserved for corporate presentationsâflickered to life.
A whisper swept through the crowd. Madison turned toward the screen, her glass freezing in her hand.
Audio began to play over the high-powered sound system. It was crystal clear, raw, and undeniable.
Markâs Voice (Recorded): âWhy did you do it, Maddie? You told me that tea was just for her anxiety!â
Madisonâs Voice (Recorded): âShut up, you idiot! She was supposed to lose the babies! If those kids were born, the trust fund would locked up in a guardianship account for eighteen years! We needed her to hemorrhage before the doctor could perform the C-section!â
Markâs Voice: âYou poisoned her! Hope is in the NICU fighting for her life!â
Madisonâs Voice: âWho cares about that unwanted brat?! The plan failed because that damn doctor operated without your consent! Now keep your mouth shut or Iâll tell the police you were the one who put the drops in her cup!â
The ballroom erupted into violent gasps.
Madisonâs face drained of all color, turning a ghostly shade of white. She dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering on the polished marble floor.
âNo... no, thatâs fake! Thatâs an AI edit!â Madison screamed, looking around frantically at the horrified faces of the city's elite. âTurn it off!â
The screen flickered again, displaying high-definition security camera footage from Madisonâs private kitchen, showing her carefully dripping a chemical solution into a tin of tea leaves labeled For Emily.
Madison turned to run toward the exit, but the heavy double doors flew open.
A dozen federal agents and police officers poured into the room, led by Officer Rodriguez and accompanied by Attorney Richard Vance.
âMadison Vale,â Officer Rodriguez announced, his voice echoing across the quiet room. âYou are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and intentional poisoning.â
Madison backed away, her high heels catching on her dress, sending her crashing to the floor. âMark! Mark, where are you?! You set me up!â

From behind the ranks of police officers, Mark walked out. His face was hollow, his wrists bound in handcuffsâhe had agreed to surrender himself and confess to his negligence in exchange for a reduced sentence, just to ensure Madison was brought down.
âI loved you, Maddie,â Mark said, his voice completely devoid of life. âAnd you destroyed everything I ever cared about.â
