CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Hidden in Noah's Blood

Three hours later...
the waiting room was silent.
Rain hammered against the hospital windows while Nathan and Emma sat on opposite sides of the hallway.
Neither spoke.
Both stared at the intensive care unit.
Finally...
the doctor emerged.
"We stabilized Noah."
Emma collapsed into tears.
Nathan caught her before she hit the floor.
She didn't pull away.
Not this time.
The doctor continued.
"There is something else."
Nathan felt his stomach tighten.
"The blood tests revealed a hereditary genetic disorder."
Emma frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor looked directly at Nathan.
"It came from the father's side."
Nathan whispered,
"My side..."
The doctor nodded.
"It's rare."
"It can usually be treated."
"But only if diagnosed early."
Emma slowly turned toward Nathan.
Her face had gone pale.
"If you hadn't been here today..."
The doctor finished the sentence.
"...we might never have found it."
Silence.
Heavy.
Unbearable.
Nathan suddenly realized that fate had given him exactly one chance.
Not to erase the past.
But to save the future.
Over the following weeks...
Nathan accompanied Noah to every specialist appointment.
He never called himself Dad.
Never interrupted Emma's parenting.
He simply carried backpacks.
Held hospital doors.
Read dinosaur books during long treatments.
Sometimes Noah would fall asleep against his shoulder without realizing it.
Nathan never moved.
Not even once.
One afternoon Ethan asked a question that froze the entire room.
"Mom..."
"Why does Mr. Nathan always look at us like he's going to cry?"
Emma couldn't answer.
Nathan quietly smiled.
"Because..."
"You remind me of someone I loved very much."
Ethan nodded thoughtfully.
"Was she nice?"
Nathan looked at Emma.
"The nicest person I've ever known."
Emma quickly turned toward the window...
hiding tears she didn't want anyone to see.
Meanwhile...
Margaret Harrison wasn't finished.
Losing control over Nathan hadn't satisfied her.
She hired private investigators.
Lawyers.
Public-relations experts.
Then she announced a press conference.
Standing before dozens of cameras she declared,
"The claims involving those children are completely fabricated."
"My son is being manipulated."
News channels exploded.
Social media divided overnight.
Some defended Emma.
Others accused her of trapping a billionaire.
By evening...
Reporters had surrounded Emma's school.
Parents began complaining.
Students whispered.
The principal called Emma into his office.
"We're receiving pressure."
Emma quietly asked,
"Am I being fired?"
The principal sighed.
"I hope not."
"But the school board meets tomorrow."
Outside...
May you like
Nathan watched reporters shouting at Emma as she protected the twins from flashing cameras.
Something inside him snapped.
