CHAPTER 5: The Funeral That Trapped the Killers

For seven days...

America believed Director Harrison was dead.

Television stations replayed his smiling photograph.

Politicians praised his "years of loyal service."

Even Senator Reeves—speaking from his prison cell through his attorney—released a statement.

"Justice has finally moved on."

Harrison watched every broadcast from an underground command center nearly fifty feet below an abandoned military base.

Beside him stood only three people he trusted.

Agent Maya Brooks.

Former Navy hacker Ethan Cole.

And Judge Eleanor Grant—the only federal judge who knew Harrison had survived.

Maya looked at him.

"They've stopped searching."

Harrison nodded.

"Good."

"They're about to make their biggest mistake."

Three days later...

Washington National Cathedral filled with thousands of mourners.

Military honor guards stood perfectly still.

Cabinet members.

Federal judges.

CEOs.

Media executives.

Every powerful person Harrison had investigated came to his funeral.

Including the people who had ordered his murder.

Outside...

Black SUVs lined the streets for nearly half a mile.

Inside...

The closed casket rested beneath a massive American flag.

Everyone believed Harrison's body was inside.

No one knew...

The coffin was completely empty.

As the minister began speaking...

A woman dressed in black quietly walked through the crowd.

She carried a small bouquet of white lilies.

No one recognized her.

Because it wasn't a mourner.

It was Agent Maya.

Hidden inside the flowers...

Was a miniature facial-recognition camera.

Every person who approached Harrison's casket was secretly scanned.

Every handshake.

Every whispered conversation.

Every hidden expression.

Then something unexpected happened.

A tall businessman leaned toward the coffin and whispered...

"You should've stayed retired, old man."

Maya's eyes widened.

She immediately transmitted his face to Ethan.

Within seconds...

His identity appeared on the screen.

Jonathan Pierce.

Officially...

He was CEO of one of America's largest airport security contractors.

Unofficially...

He had appeared in over thirty classified financial investigations.

But there was one detail that froze everyone.

Jonathan Pierce had spoken to Harrison's "body"...

As if he already knew Harrison had been murdered.

Not killed in an accident.

Murdered.

He had just revealed himself.

The funeral ended.

Black limousines slowly left the cathedral.

Jonathan entered his armored vehicle.

He smiled confidently.

"The old fool never saw us coming."

His driver nodded.

"We're safe now."

Jonathan laughed.

"There was never any evidence."

Then...

Every screen inside the limousine suddenly turned on by themselves.

A familiar face appeared.

Director Harrison.

Alive.

Looking directly into the camera.

Jonathan's smile disappeared instantly.

Harrison spoke calmly.

"You attended my funeral..."

"Exactly as I expected."

Jonathan grabbed the emergency phone.

No signal.

The doors automatically locked.

Then Harrison continued.

"While you were mourning me..."

"My team emptied every server your company owns."

"And by now..."

"The FBI is already inside your headquarters."

Jonathan screamed at the driver.

"Move!"

But it was too late.

As the limousine reached the next intersection...

More than twenty federal vehicles surrounded it from every direction.

Helicopters filled the sky.

Agents aimed their weapons.

Jonathan whispered in disbelief...

"It was all..."

"...a trap."

At that exact moment...

Harrison stepped from an unmarked black SUV across the street.

Alive.

Calm.

Untouchable.

He adjusted his tie...

Looked Jonathan straight in the eyes...

And said the words that would soon make headlines across the country:

"You didn't come to my funeral...

May you like

You came to your own arrest."
