CHAPTER 6: The Vault They Never Wanted Opened

Jonathan Pierce's arrest shook the nation.

News helicopters followed every convoy.

Television anchors called it the largest corruption case in modern aviation history.

But Harrison wasn't celebrating.

As Jonathan was being escorted into federal custody, he suddenly laughed.

Not the laugh of a defeated man.

The laugh of someone who knew something no one else did.

He leaned toward Harrison and whispered,

"You still think I was in charge."

Harrison's expression didn't change.

Jonathan smiled wider.

"I'm just the accountant."

Those four words sent a chill through everyone standing nearby.

Two hours later...

Jonathan agreed to cooperate.

But only under one condition.

"I'll tell you everything..."

"...if you take me to Vault Nine."

The interrogation room fell silent.

Agent Maya frowned.

"There is no Vault Nine."

Jonathan looked directly at her.

"That's what they want you to believe."

He slid a small brass key across the table.

The number 9 was engraved into it.

"This opens the room that doesn't exist."

That night...

Harrison, Maya, Ethan, and a tactical team descended beneath the airport through an abandoned maintenance tunnel dating back to the 1960s.

The tunnel wasn't on any official blueprint.

After nearly twenty minutes of walking...

They reached a massive steel door hidden behind a concrete wall.

There was no keypad.

No security camera.

Only an old brass lock.

Jonathan's key fit perfectly.

With a heavy metallic click...

The door slowly opened.

Dust filled the air.

Rows of shelves stretched into darkness.

Thousands of sealed boxes.

Each labeled with dates spanning more than thirty years.

Maya opened the nearest box.

Inside were passports.

Hundreds of them.

Different names.

Different countries.

All genuine.

Another box contained stacks of cash.

Another held encrypted hard drives.

Then Ethan gasped.

"Harrison..."

"You need to see this."

On the far wall hung hundreds of framed photographs.

Politicians.

Judges.

Military officers.

Corporate CEOs.

Foreign diplomats.

Every photograph had a red stamp across it.

CONTROLLED

Except one.

In the center of the wall...

A single photograph had a gold frame.

No stamp.

Only one handwritten word beneath it.

FOUNDER

Harrison slowly stepped closer.

His breathing stopped.

The face in the photograph...

Was Director William Carter.

The mentor everyone believed had died eight years ago.

He hadn't died.

He had disappeared.

Because he had built the entire criminal network himself.

Before anyone could speak—

The room suddenly locked itself.

Massive steel doors slammed shut behind them.

Red emergency lights began flashing.

A computerized voice echoed through the underground vault.

"Unauthorized access detected."

"Self-destruct sequence initiated."

"Ten minutes remaining."

Maya looked at Harrison in panic.

"We've been trapped."

Harrison stared at Carter's photograph...

Then quietly whispered,

"No..."

"He wanted us to find this place."

As another hidden door slowly opened at the back of the vault...

Footsteps echoed from the darkness.

Someone was walking toward them.

And when the figure stepped into the red emergency light...

Harrison's face turned white.

It wasn't William Carter.

It was someone even worse.

Someone Harrison had trusted...

May you like

For over twenty-five years.
