CHAP 5: THE CORNERED RAT

The revelation hung in the air like a poisonous fog.

Luis stared at Ernesto, the man who had oppressed him for years, now realizing the depth of the monster's depravity. He hadn't just been an abusive boss; he had been a warden, keeping Luis and his mother in a state of perpetual survival to prevent them from discovering they were royalty.

"You... you knew?" Luis walked toward Ernesto, his voice dangerously low. The quiet, gentle mechanic was gone. In his eyes burned the wrath of a son whose mother had been systematically poisoned and kept in poverty. "You let my mother suffer. You let her starve. You watched me beg for advances on my salary just to buy her basic painkillers, while you sat on the truth?"

"It was business, kid!" Ernesto sneered, though he took a step back, intimidated by the raw fury radiating from Luis. "Your grandfather owed me. And your mother chose to live like a dog. I just took advantage of an opportunity. But now, I hold the cards. If Doña Elena doesn't drop the debt and give me 10% of the Valdez Group shares, I’ll release the files. The toxic exposure reports will destroy your brand's reputation, and the scandal will tank your stock!"

Elena stepped forward, her regal posture restored, her eyes cold as grave dirt. "You think a Valdez bows to blackmail, Ernesto? You are a fool."

"Am I?" Ernesto laughed, pulling out a small black flash drive from his pocket. "The digital copies are set to upload to every major news outlet in thirty minutes. Oh, and one more thing... Maria’s current treatment? The experimental drug she needs to survive the next month? My brother is the head of the pharmaceutical distribution board in this district. One phone call from me, and her name is blacklisted. She won't survive the week."

Luis felt the world tilt. The sheer, calculated evil of the man was suffocating. He looked at Elena, whose face had gone pale. Ernesto had backed them into a corner. He was playing with Maria's life.

"Give me the contract," Ernesto demanded, throwing a pen onto the glass table. "Ten percent. And my debt cleared. Now."

Luis looked at the pen. He looked at the flash drive in Ernesto’s hand. He felt the crushing weight of his mother’s fragile heartbeat in his chest. He reached out his hand toward the pen.

"Luis, no," Elena whispered, her heart breaking for her newly found nephew.

"I have to, Aunt Elena," Luis said, the word Aunt heavy and unfamiliar on his tongue, but filled with a sudden, fierce protective instinct. "I won't let her die."

Ernesto smirked, a grotesque grin of victory stretching across his face. "That's a good boy. Know your place."

But just as Luis’s fingers touched the pen, the glass doors of the VIP lounge slid open once more.

A sharp, authoritative female voice cut through the tension. "I wouldn't sign that if I were you."
