Chapter 1: The Boy Who Knelt Without Asking

No one in Rosewood Heights ever walked across the lawns of the Ashcroft Mansion.
The estate was famous for two things.
Its unimaginable wealth...
...and the family that trusted almost no one.
Every morning, luxury cars came and went through the iron gates. Gardeners, chefs, security guards, and chauffeurs worked in silence.
But that afternoon...
A young man in a simple white shirt ignored every rule.
He wasn't there for money.
He wasn't hoping to impress anyone.
He simply carried an old white basin filled with warm water.
Inside the wheelchair sat a twelve-year-old blonde girl named Lily.
Her fragile legs hadn't carried her weight since the accident three years ago.
Doctors called it permanent.
The newspapers called it tragic.
The internet called her...
"The Billionaire's Broken Princess."
But Ethan never called her that.
To him...
She was simply Lily.
The girl who still laughed at terrible jokes.
The girl who secretly loved painting sunsets.
The girl who smiled even when pain stole her sleep.
Ethan carefully rolled the wheelchair onto the soft grass.
Golden evening sunlight wrapped around the mansion like something out of a dream.
He knelt in front of her.
Without hesitation...
He slipped off her tiny shoes.
Lily looked embarrassed.
"You don't have to keep doing this."
Ethan smiled.
"I know."
"But I want to."
He lowered her feet into the warm water.
Tiny ripples spread across the basin.
For a moment...
Neither of them spoke.
The world seemed strangely quiet.
Only birds sang in the distance.
Ethan gently washed the scars covering her ankles.
Not with pity.
With respect.
As though every scar told a story worth honoring.
Lily bit her lip.
"Everyone else looks at my wheelchair first."
"You never do."
Ethan shrugged.
"I've never believed wheels define a person."
A tear escaped her eye.
She quickly wiped it away before he noticed.
Or at least...
She thought he hadn't noticed.
Inside the mansion...
Someone had been watching everything.
Behind the tall glass windows stood Victor Ashcroft.
The billionaire who had built an empire from nothing.
The man who trusted contracts more than people.
Beside him stood his elegant wife, Eleanor.
For months they had secretly watched Ethan visit.
Never asking for money.
Never asking for favors.
Never taking photographs.
Never posting online.
Every afternoon...
He simply came.
Read books to Lily.
Made her laugh.
Helped with therapy.
Then quietly disappeared before dinner.
Victor narrowed his eyes.
"There has to be a reason."
Eleanor whispered,
"Maybe..."
"There isn't."
Victor didn't believe her.
Nobody did something like this for free.
Not anymore.
He ordered security to investigate.
The report shocked everyone.
No criminal record.
No debts.
No rich family.
No hidden connections.
No social media seeking attention.
Just one tiny apartment...
A part-time job...
And hospital volunteer records stretching back nearly seven years.
Victor frowned.
"It still doesn't make sense."
Outside...
Ethan gently dried Lily's feet with a clean white towel.
She suddenly asked,
"Can I tell you a secret?"
He nodded.
She leaned closer.
"I'm scared."
"Not of the wheelchair."
"Not of the pain."
"I'm scared everyone only loves my family's money."
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He picked a tiny wildflower growing beside the lawn.
Placed it in her hand.
And smiled.
"The people worth keeping..."
"Would still choose you if this mansion disappeared tomorrow."
Lily stared at the flower.
Then burst into tears.
Not because she was sad.
Because no one had ever said those words before.
At that exact moment...
The mansion doors slowly opened.
Victor and Eleanor stepped outside.
The servants froze.
Security guards exchanged confused looks.
The billionaire couple almost never greeted visitors personally.
Victor walked directly toward Ethan.
Stopping only inches away.
His expression revealed nothing.
For several long seconds...
Silence.
Finally...
Victor asked one simple question.
"If tomorrow..."
"My company vanished..."
"My money disappeared..."
"My name meant nothing..."
"Would you still come here?"
Ethan looked up.
Then quietly stood.
His answer came without a second of hesitation.
"I wasn't visiting your fortune."
"I came because Lily shouldn't have to face this world alone."
Victor's face remained emotionless.
He simply nodded once.
Turned around.
And walked back toward the mansion.
Everyone thought the conversation was over.
They were wrong.
Because inside Victor's office...
Hidden in a locked drawer...
Was a document that would change Ethan's life forever.
A document carrying one unbelievable sentence:
"The next heir to the Ashcroft fortune must prove kindness before receiving a single dollar."
And Victor had just found the first person...
Who had unknowingly passed the test.
But Ethan had no idea that someone else had also been watching him from the shadows...
May you like
Someone who would do absolutely anything to make sure he never became part of the Ashcroft family.
