Chapter 4: The Hidden Room Beneath the Greenhouse

The old greenhouse had been abandoned for almost ten years.

Broken glass covered the ground.

Dead vines wrapped around rusted iron beams.

Everyone believed it was empty.

Everyone...

Except Lily.

She sat alone in a small underground room beneath the greenhouse, illuminated by a single flickering light bulb.

The room had no windows.

Only a heavy steel door.

Her wheelchair rested beside an old wooden bed.

She hugged the tiny wildflower Ethan had given her.

It was beginning to wilt.

"So... this is how it ends," she whispered.

But Lily wasn't crying anymore.

She had realized something.

Margaret wasn't trying to kidnap her for ransom.

She wanted something far more valuable.

The Ashcroft fortune.

Back at the police station...

Ethan sat alone inside an interrogation room.

A detective slammed a thick folder onto the table.

"Tell us where Lily is."

"I don't know."

"You expect us to believe that?"

"I've never lied to her."

The detective threw photographs across the table.

The backpack.

The note.

The anonymous phone call.

Every piece of evidence screamed that Ethan was guilty.

Yet none of it explained one question.

If Ethan had kidnapped Lily...

Why was there not a single dollar demanded?

No ransom.

No threats.

Nothing.

Even the detectives began exchanging uncertain looks.

Something didn't fit.

Meanwhile...

Victor Ashcroft stood alone in Lily's bedroom.

He picked up one of her paintings.

It showed a little girl in a wheelchair...

Holding hands with a smiling young man beneath a bright sunset.

In the corner...

Lily had written only three words.

"My Safe Place."

Victor's hands trembled.

Would a child paint her kidnapper like that?

His heart began to sink.

For the first time...

He questioned everything.

Across town...

Henry slowly regained consciousness.

His head was bleeding.

His phone was gone.

But something else remained.

His old security camera.

Years earlier, Henry had secretly installed a motion-activated camera to catch thieves stealing gardening equipment.

He had completely forgotten about it.

With shaking hands, he hurried to the tiny storage shed.

The memory card was still inside.

He inserted it into an old computer.

The screen flickered.

At first...

Nothing.

Then...

11:47 PM.

The footage appeared.

Henry's eyes widened.

A black luxury SUV stopped behind the greenhouse.

Margaret stepped out.

Two large bodyguards carried Lily—still asleep after being drugged—into the underground cellar.

Henry gasped.

"We've got you..."

He immediately copied the footage onto a flash drive.

"This will save Ethan."

He rushed toward the front gate.

But someone else had been watching the security monitor.

Margaret.

She smiled calmly.

Then picked up her phone.

"Don't let that old man leave the property."

Henry jumped into his rusty pickup truck.

His hands shook as he started the engine.

The flash drive rested safely inside his shirt pocket.

He pressed the accelerator.

The gate was only fifty yards away.

Freedom.

Justice.

Hope.

Then...

Headlights exploded out of the darkness.

A black SUV sped directly toward him.

"No..."

Henry whispered.

CRASH!

The impact sent his truck spinning across the road.

Metal twisted.

Glass shattered.

The pickup rolled twice before crashing upside down into a ditch.

The black SUV never stopped.

It disappeared into the night.

At sunrise...

Police arrived at the wreck.

Henry was barely alive.

Paramedics searched his pockets.

Wallet.

Keys.

Broken glasses.

No flash drive.

It had vanished.

As officers secured the scene, a young female paramedic noticed something strange.

Henry's right hand was tightly clenched.

She carefully opened his fingers.

Inside...

Was a tiny silver key.

Attached to it was a faded paper tag.

"Greenhouse Basement – Locker 17."

The paramedic frowned.

"What could this possibly open?"

Hundreds of miles away, Ethan sat silently inside his jail cell, unaware that the only evidence proving his innocence was hidden behind a locker no one even knew existed.

And deep beneath the greenhouse...

Lily heard footsteps approaching her steel door.

Margaret entered with a cold smile.

She placed a stack of legal papers on the table.

Then quietly said the words that made Lily's blood run cold.

"Sign these documents..."

"...or by tomorrow morning..."

May you like

"...the whole world will watch Ethan die for a crime he never committed."
