Chapter 5: The Trial That Changed Everything

The courtroom was overflowing.

Journalists crowded every aisle.

Television cameras waited outside.

Millions were watching the trial live.

Across the country...

People believed only one thing.

Ethan Carter was guilty.

The kind volunteer.

The gentle young man.

The one who had washed a disabled girl's feet with kindness.

Now...

He stood in chains.

The prosecutor pointed directly at him.

"This man carefully earned the Ashcroft family's trust..."

"...only to kidnap their daughter for his own selfish plan."

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Ethan never lowered his head.

He simply answered,

"I didn't take Lily."

"I don't care if the whole world believes I'm guilty."

"I will never confess to something I didn't do."

Victor Ashcroft sat in the front row.

He hadn't slept in four days.

His eyes were red.

His heart was torn between evidence...

...and instinct.

Every memory of Ethan refused to match the monster standing accused.

Yet Lily was still missing.

And every clue pointed toward him.

Victor silently prayed he was wrong.

At the Ashcroft Mansion...

Margaret watched the trial on a giant television.

She smiled.

Everything was unfolding exactly as planned.

Once Ethan was convicted...

She would become Lily's legal guardian.

And once Lily signed the inheritance papers...

The Ashcroft empire would belong to her.

There would be no witnesses.

No questions.

No one left to stop her.

Or so she thought.

Deep beneath the abandoned greenhouse...

Margaret unlocked the steel door.

She carried a silver tray of food.

Lily refused to touch it.

"You can keep starving yourself."

"It won't change anything."

Lily stared directly into her aunt's eyes.

"My father will find me."

Margaret laughed.

"No."

"He'll bury Ethan first."

Then she placed a thick folder onto the bed.

Inside...

Transfer of inheritance.

Power of attorney.

Medical authority.

Everything.

"Sign."

Lily slowly picked up the pen.

Margaret smiled.

Finally...

Victory.

But instead of signing...

Lily quietly tore every page into tiny pieces.

One...

After another.

Margaret's smile vanished.

"You little brat."

Without warning...

She slapped Lily across the face.

The sound echoed through the underground room.

For the first time...

Margaret's mask completely disappeared.

Her eyes burned with hatred.

"I should have let you die in that accident."

Lily froze.

"What... did you say?"

Margaret leaned closer.

Her voice became almost a whisper.

"It wasn't an accident."

"The brakes failed..."

"...because I made sure they failed."

Silence.

Lily couldn't breathe.

Three years...

Three years she had blamed fate.

Three years believing life had simply been cruel.

But now...

She knew the truth.

The woman standing before her had stolen her childhood.

Back at the courthouse...

The judge adjusted his glasses.

"The court has reached a decision."

Every camera focused on Ethan.

Outside...

Crowds held signs reading:

LOCK HIM UP!

JUSTICE FOR LILY!

Inside the courtroom...

The judge slowly opened the verdict.

"Guilty..."

Suddenly—

BOOM!

The courtroom doors burst open.

Everyone turned.

A young female paramedic sprinted inside.

Covered in dirt.

Breathing heavily.

Holding a tiny silver key above her head.

"STOP THE VERDICT!"

"I KNOW WHERE LILY IS!"

The room fell completely silent.

Victor stood up so quickly his chair crashed onto the floor.

The prosecutor shouted,

"Who are you?"

She held up the key.

"This belonged to Henry..."

"The gardener."

"He died protecting this."

"And he left one message."

She unfolded the bloodstained paper tag.

Every person in the courtroom leaned forward.

Written in faded ink were five terrifying words:

"Greenhouse Basement... Locker 17."

Victor's face turned white.

Because only one person...

Had ever possessed the master key to Locker 17.

His sister.

Margaret.

At that exact same moment...

Margaret, watching the live broadcast from the mansion, dropped her teacup.

It shattered across the marble floor.

For the very first time...

She looked afraid.

Very afraid.

Because she knew...

May you like

The police were already on their way.
