Chapter 3: The Night She Vanished

The Ashcroft Mansion had never been so quiet.
Not after midnight.
Not after Lily disappeared.
Police cars lined the entrance.
Flashing red and blue lights painted the marble walls.
Detectives searched every room.
Security guards were questioned one by one.
Yet...
No one had seen a little girl in a wheelchair leave the estate.
It was impossible.
Or so everyone believed.
Miles away...
Ethan couldn't sleep.
Something felt wrong.
The image of Lily's frightened eyes haunted him.
His phone buzzed.
Unknown Number.
He answered.
Only silence.
Then...
A tiny whisper.
"Ethan..."
It was Lily.
His heart nearly stopped.
"Lily? Where are you?"
Static crackled.
"I... don't have much time..."
"Aunt Margaret..."
The call suddenly ended.
The screen went black.
One minute later...
The number no longer existed.
Inside the mansion...
Victor Ashcroft slammed his fist onto the conference table.
"Search everywhere."
"I don't care what it costs."
"I want my daughter found before sunrise."
The room fell silent.
Then Margaret stepped forward.
Her eyes were full of fake tears.
"We all know who took her."
Victor looked up.
"What are you talking about?"
Margaret sighed dramatically.
"The only outsider Lily trusted..."
"...was Ethan."
Gasps filled the room.
Several executives nodded.
"It makes sense."
"He lost access to the mansion yesterday."
"Maybe he wanted revenge."
Margaret lowered her head.
"I prayed I was wrong..."
"But perhaps we trusted the wrong man."
Victor said nothing.
His face turned cold.
Within minutes...
Police officers were driving toward Ethan's apartment.
At exactly 2:13 a.m...
Someone pounded violently on Ethan's front door.
"Police!"
"Open up!"
Confused and half asleep, Ethan unlocked the door.
Officers rushed inside.
They searched every room.
Closets.
Kitchen.
Bathroom.
Bedroom.
Nothing.
Then...
One detective looked beneath Ethan's bed.
"There!"
He pulled out a small pink backpack.
Lily's backpack.
The one she carried everywhere.
Ethan's face turned pale.
"I've never seen that before!"
No one listened.
The detective slowly opened the bag.
Inside were Lily's favorite teddy bear...
Her sketchbook...
And a handwritten note.
Victor Ashcroft arrived just as the evidence was laid across the table.
His hands trembled.
The detective unfolded the letter.
It read:
"Don't look for me. Ethan is taking me somewhere no one will ever find me."
Victor closed his eyes.
His world collapsed.
He looked at Ethan with heartbreaking disappointment.
"I believed you..."
Ethan shook his head desperately.
"I swear on my life..."
"I didn't write that."
"I didn't take Lily."
"I would never hurt her."
But every piece of evidence pointed toward him.
The backpack.
The phone call.
The note.
The timing.
Everything.
The handcuffs clicked shut.
Reporters outside exploded with excitement.
"BILLIONAIRE'S DAUGHTER ABDUCTED!"
"TRUSTED FAMILY FRIEND ARRESTED!"
"CHARITY VOLUNTEER EXPOSED AS KIDNAPPER?"
Within hours...
The entire country hated Ethan.
Millions shared his photo online.
Strangers called him a monster.
His employer fired him before sunrise.
Neighbors refused to look him in the eye.
Margaret watched every news broadcast from her private suite.
She smiled into her cup of tea.
"Phase One..."
"...completed."
But she didn't notice someone else standing outside the mansion.
An elderly gardener.
Mr. Henry.
For thirty years, no one had paid much attention to him.
Yet earlier that evening...
He had quietly seen Margaret pushing an empty wheelchair toward the abandoned greenhouse behind the estate.
He had even taken one blurry photograph on his old phone.
At first...
He thought nothing of it.
Now...
As Ethan's police car disappeared into the darkness...
Henry looked at the photo again.
His hands began to shake.
Because reflected in the greenhouse window...
He could clearly see Lily.
She hadn't been kidnapped.
She had been imprisoned.
And the person locking the door...
Wasn't Ethan.
It was Margaret.
Henry whispered to himself,
"Oh, God..."
"They arrested the wrong man."
He reached for his phone.
But before he could press the call button...
A pair of black leather gloves slowly covered his mouth from behind.
A cold voice whispered into his ear.
"You should have minded your own business."
Henry's phone slipped from his hand...
The screen shattered on the stone path...
And the only photograph that could save Ethan...
May you like
Disappeared into the darkness.
