Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Ledger

📌 "The numbers don't lie, Dorian. But your father did."By three o'clock that afternoon, the study of the Vale estate looked like a war room.

Dorian had stripped off his suit jacket, rolling his sleeves up to his elbows. Marin sat at the massive oak desk, surrounded by dozens of printouts and three separate laptops she had demanded Callum fetch from her hidden cache in the Vesper mansion.

"Look at this," Marin said, tapping a pen against a column of numbers on the central screen.

Dorian leaned over her shoulder, his chest nearly brushing her back. The scent of her—soap and old paper, entirely different from the heavy, expensive perfumes Celeste used—filled his senses.

"Aldrich wasn't just losing money on bad investments," Dorian observed, his eyes tracking the flow. "He was cleaning it."

"Exactly," Marin said, turning her chair slightly to face him. "The Morvath family has been using the Vesper shipping routes to move unregistered cargo for five years. But look at the destination of the cleaned funds. The St. Jude Foundation isn't a charity. It’s a blind trust registered in the name of Arthur Vale."

Dorian’s body went completely rigid.

Arthur Vale was his father. The man who had built the Vale empire with blood and iron before dying in a suspicious car crash three years ago.

"My father had nothing to do with the Morvaths," Dorian said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "He spent his entire life keeping them out of our territory."

"Then why did he accept twelve million dollars from them every single month through your family's old foundation?" Marin asked gently, her voice showing no fear of his sudden, terrifying aura. She reached out, her small fingers lightly touching the edge of his rolled-up sleeve. "Dorian. Your father didn't keep the Morvaths out. He owned them. And when he died, Aldrich Vesper tried to take over the operation, but he didn't have the brains to keep the books clean."

Dorian stared at the screen, his mind piecing together a decade of lies. The wedding wasn't just an alliance between two powerful families. It was a trap. Aldrich wanted Celeste married to Dorian so that when the financial investigation finally hit the Vespers, the entire trail of dirty money would lead straight back to the House of Vale.

"They were going to frame me," Dorian said, a dark, terrible understanding settling into his features.

"They were going to destroy you," Marin corrected. "Aldrich planned to use the forty million dollar dowry to fill the hole in his own accounts, leave the dirty paper trail in your system, and then tip off the federal prosecutors. You would have spent the next twenty years in a maximum-security prison while Aldrich took over your shipping docks."

Dorian let out a slow, cold breath. He looked down at Marin, his hand coming up to gently trace the line of her jaw, lifting her face so she had to look directly into his eyes.

"And you knew this before this morning?"

"I found the final pieces of the puzzle last night," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs at his sudden proximity. "That’s why I told Celeste to run. If she stayed, the wedding would have gone through, the money would have transferred, and the trap would have sprung."

"You saved my life, Marin."

"I saved my own skin," she retorted, trying to maintain her cold exterior. "If you fell, the Morvaths would have wiped out the Vespers anyway to clear the witnesses. I needed you alive so we could kill them both."

Dorian’s thumb brushed her lower lip. "A wife who can read a ledger and plan a double assassination before breakfast. I definitely got the better end of the bargain."

Before Marin could reply, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Ren stood there, his face pale, his hand hovering near his concealed holster.

"Sir," Ren said quickly. "We have a problem. Aldrich Vesper just arrived at the outer gate. And he didn't come alone. He brought Marcus Morvath."
