Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

📌 "You wanted the golden daughter, but you brought home the queen of the chessboard."Three weeks later, the Grand Plaza Hotel was hosting the annual Winter Gala—the most exclusive event on the city’s social calendar.

Every powerful family, every politician, and every high-ranking criminal mastermind was in attendance. The main topic of conversation for twenty-one days had been the Vesper wedding scandal. The rumors were wild: Celeste had been murdered; Dorian had gone mad; the quiet younger daughter had cast a spell.

The double doors of the ballroom opened, and the entire room fell dead silent.

Dorian Vale entered first. He looked as lethal and imposing as ever in a midnight-black tuxedo. But it was the woman on his arm that caused several people to drop their champagne flutes.

Marin Vesper—now Marin Vale—did not look like a ghost anymore.

She wore a gown of heavy, midnight-blue silk that fit her perfectly, its sharp, clean cuts emphasizing her slender frame and high cheekbones. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, intricate updo, held together by a diamond hairpin that had once belonged to Dorian’s mother. She still wore her glasses, but they sat on her nose like a weapon, framing eyes that looked completely unafraid of the hundreds of people staring at her.

"Smile, standard procedure," Dorian murmured to her, his hand resting securely over hers on his forearm.

"I am smiling," Marin whispered back, her lips twitching slightly. "Internally."

At the far end of the ballroom, Aldrich and Petra Vesper stood by the bar. In just three weeks, Aldrich looked like he had aged ten years. His clothes hung loosely on him, his company stripped away, his reputation reduced to a cautionary tale about what happens when you try to outsmart Dorian Vale.

Aldrich caught Marin’s eye and began walking toward them, his expression a mix of desperate rage and public humiliation.

"Marin," Aldrich said, his voice trembling as he stopped in front of them. "You think you’ve won? You think because you stole my company and married into this house of killers you’re safe? The board members are already questioning the validity of the transfers. You used illegal signatures. I will see you in a courtroom before the month is out."

Marin stopped. She looked at her father, then at the wealthy crowd that had slowly gathered around them to watch the final act of the Vesper drama.

"There won't be a courtroom, Father," Marin said, her voice clear enough for every whispering socialite to hear. "Because to sue me, you would have to explain under oath where the signature override came from. You would have to explain the cargo manifests from 2024. And you would have to explain why the federal authorities found thirty-two kilograms of undocumented luxury goods in your private warehouse this morning."

Aldrich gasped, stepping back. "You... you planted that—"

"I didn't plant anything," Marin said coldly. "You left it there because you were too arrogant to think anyone would look. I simply gave the customs inspectors the key to the back door."

Two men in dark suits stepped out from the crowd behind Aldrich. One of them produced a pair of silver handcuffs.

"Aldrich Vesper?" the lead agent said. "You're under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to traffic illegal goods. Please step with us."

Petra Vesper let out a sharp shriek as her husband was led away in front of the entire high-society crowd. He didn't look back. He couldn't. His empire was dead, his name was mud, and the daughter he had spent twenty-six years ignoring had just delivered the final blow without ever raising her voice.

Dorian looked down at his wife, a profound, unyielding pride shining in his eyes. "Should we get a drink, Mrs. Vale?"

"Yes," Marin said, adjusting her glasses. "I believe we have a new empire to run."
