Chapter 2 - THE READING OF THE WILL

Headline: THE WIDOW SMILED AS SHE DEMANDED HIS MILLIONS—UNTIL THE LAWYER READ THE ONE CLAUSE THAT RUINED THEM BOTH!The conference room on the 44th floor of the Lawson & Associates building in downtown Chicago was suffocatingly quiet. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the rain-slicked city, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken malice.
Vanessa sat on the left side of the massive mahogany table. She had traded her funeral veil for a tailored cream-colored blazer and dark trousers—the look of a grieving widow who was ready to step into the role of a corporate matriarch. Ryan sat directly beside her, his chair angled just a fraction too close to hers. He had changed into a fresh navy suit, looking every bit the conquering hero who had successfully executed a bloodless coup.
When I walked in, Ryan’s eyes flicked to mine, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. He thought I was a broken woman. He thought the divorce papers had shattered me.
"Emily," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with calculated sympathy. "I'm so glad you could make it. I know how hard today is."
"I'm sure you do," I said quietly, taking a seat directly opposite them.
Richard Lawson, a towering man with silver hair and eyes like chipped flint, sat at the head of the table. He didn't smile. He didn't offer pleasantries. He simply adjusted his glasses and laid a thick, wax-sealed document on the table.
"Thank you all for coming," Richard began, his deep baritone cutting through the tension. "We are here for the execution of the Last Will and Testament of Daniel James Carter. As you know, Daniel was a meticulous planner. This document was updated and finalized precisely six days ago."
Vanessa's smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Six days ago? But his previous will was drafted two years ago. I was under the impression—"
"Daniel made several key amendments, Mrs. Carter," Richard interrupted coolly. "Shall we begin?"
Ryan leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Let's get to it, Richard. Vanessa has been through enough. We want to wrap up the transition of Carter Freight Solutions as quickly as possible so the board can vote on the new leadership."
"Of course, Mr. Vance," Richard said. He broke the seal and opened the document.
"To my wife, Vanessa Carter," Richard read, "I leave the primary residence in Lake Forest, Illinois, and a lump-sum distribution of five hundred thousand dollars."
Vanessa gasped, her elegant posture stiffening. "Five hundred thousand? That's... that's a mistake. Daniel’s estate is worth upwards of eighty million dollars! The company alone—"
"Let me finish, Vanessa," Richard said, his voice dropping an octave. "The aforementioned distribution of five hundred thousand dollars and the Lake Forest property are subject to a strict Morality and Corporate Integrity Clause."
Ryan stood up, his face flushing red. "What the hell does that mean?"
"It means," Richard said, looking directly at Ryan over his glasses, "that if Vanessa Carter is found to have committed marital infidelity, corporate espionage, or embezzlement against Carter Freight Solutions during the term of their marriage, her share of the estate is immediately reduced to exactly zero dollars. Furthermore, all real estate titles will revert instantly to the Carter Family Trust."
The room became so quiet you could hear the air conditioning hum.
"This is ridiculous!" Vanessa hissed, her mask of grief completely slipping. "He was paranoid! He was losing his mind!"
"Daniel was of perfectly sound mind," Richard replied smoothly. "And now, for the remainder of the estate. The remaining eighty-two million dollars in liquid assets, properties, and ninety percent of the voting shares of Carter Freight Solutions are hereby placed into the Daniel Carter Legacy Trust."
Ryan sneered. "And who controls the trust? Let me guess—a board of trustees that I have to run through?"
Richard turned his gaze to me.
"The sole trustee, with absolute, unilateral decision-making power over the trust, the company, and all subsidiary assets, is my sister, Emily Carter Vance."
Ryan’s jaw dropped. He stared at me, his eyes wide with horror and disbelief. "Her? She doesn't know the first thing about logistics! She’s an art teacher!"
"Not anymore, Ryan," I said, leaning back in my chair and looking him dead in the eye. "And by the way, it’s just Emily Carter now. You can keep the 'Vance'. I don't need it where I'm going."
Vanessa slammed her hands on the table, standing up. "I will contest this! I am his wife! This will is a fraud!"
"You can try, Vanessa," Richard said calmly. "But before you file that lawsuit, you might want to consider the final codicil of the will."
Richard slid a document across the table. It was a forensic report, bearing the official seal of the Illinois State Police Forensics Division.
"What is this?" Ryan asked, his voice suddenly shaking.
May you like
"This is the preliminary mechanical report on Daniel’s SUV," Richard said, his voice chillingly flat. "The brake lines were cleanly severed prior to his departure from the office. The drunk driver who hit him was a tragedy, yes—but Daniel’s vehicle had zero braking capacity when he tried to stop. This is no longer a civil estate matter, Vanessa. This is an active, ongoing homicide investigation."
The color drained from Vanessa’s face. She looked at Ryan, and for the first time, I saw genuine, unadulterated terror in both of their eyes.
