Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM COUP

Headline: THEY TRIED TO STEAL THE EMPIRE—SO I SHOWED UP WITH THE EXPOSED LEDGER AND DESTROYED THEIR LIVES!The headquarters of Carter Freight Solutions was a gleaming three-story glass building in Joliet. Usually, walking into this building filled me with pride. Today, it felt like entering a war zone.
Ryan had called an emergency board meeting.
He was still the Vice President of Operations, and with Daniel gone, he was trying to leverage his relationship with the board members to stage a hostile takeover before the legal transition of the trust could be finalized.
I stood outside the boardroom doors, taking a deep breath. I was wearing one of Daniel’s old silver cufflinks in my blazer pocket—a small, hidden shield.
"Ready?" Marcus asked, standing beside me in a sharp dark suit that hid his shoulder holster.
"Let's go," I said.
I pushed the heavy oak doors open.
The boardroom was packed. Twelve board members, men and women who had built this company alongside my brother, sat around the long glass table. At the head of the table stood Ryan, pointing at a slide presentation projected on the wall. Vanessa sat in the corner, looking composed, though her eyes were red-rimmed.
"...which is why," Ryan was saying, his voice carrying that familiar, salesman warmth, "in this time of crisis, we need stable, experienced leadership. Emily is a sweet girl, but she is emotionally compromised. She has no corporate experience. I propose a board resolution to freeze the voting rights of the Carter Family Trust until a mental competency evaluation can be conducted—"
"I wouldn't finish that sentence if I were you, Ryan," I said clearly, stepping into the room.
Every head snapped toward me.
Ryan’s face darkened, but he quickly recovered, putting on a paternalistic smile. "Emily. This is a private board meeting. You shouldn't be here. You're grieving, and we are just trying to protect—"
"You're trying to protect your own neck," I said, walking to the foot of the table. "But unfortunately, the rope is already too tight."
I nodded to Marcus, who stepped forward and plugged a flash drive into the boardroom’s media console.
"What is the meaning of this?" one of the older board members, Arthur Pendelton, asked. "Emily, what’s going on?"
"Arthur," I said gently, "I want to show you what my husband and my sister-in-law have been doing with the company’s pension fund and expansion capital over the last three years."
The projector screen flickered. Instead of Ryan's presentation, a series of banking sheets appeared. Millions of dollars, routed directly from Carter Freight’s operational accounts into Apex Transit Solutions, and then immediately wired to bank accounts in Panama.
"These are forged!" Ryan shouted, his voice cracking. "She’s desperate! She’s trying to smear me because I served her with divorce papers!"
"Are they forged, Ryan?" I asked, pulling Daniel's leather ledger from my bag and dropping it onto the glass table with a heavy thud. "Because this is Daniel’s personal handwriting. He tracked every single dollar you stole. He knew about the offshore accounts. He knew you were planning to ruin this company to fund your new life with Vanessa."
The board members began whispering frantically, their eyes darting between the ledger, the screen, and Ryan.
"And there’s more," I continued, my voice steady and cold. "Three days ago, five hundred thousand dollars was wired from Apex Transit Solutions—Ryan’s shell company—to the family of Gary Thomas. The man who 'accidentally' rammed into my brother’s car."
Vanessa stood up, her face white. "This is slander! You have no proof of any of this!"
"Actually, we do," Marcus said, stepping forward and flashing his private investigator credentials. "The Illinois State Police have already issued warrants for the financial records of Apex. And the FBI has just opened an interstate wire fraud investigation."
Ryan looked around the room, realizing the tide had completely turned. His allies on the board were looking away, refusing to meet his eyes.

"You think you're so smart, Emily," Ryan hissed, his face twisted in a mask of pure hatred. He walked down the side of the table until he was standing just inches from me. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a low, venomous whisper.
"You think you won? You think you can just take everything? Look at your mother's bank accounts, Emily. Daniel wasn't the only one we had under our thumb. If I go down, I'm taking your entire family's legacy with me."
