Chapter 5 - THE POISONED LEGACY

Headline: THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL: MY OWN MOTHER WAS BEING BLACKMAILED BY THE WOMAN MY BROTHER LOVED!I stood in the living room of my childhood home, my heart in my throat.

My mother, Margaret Carter, sat in her favorite armchair, her hands shaking as she held a cup of chamomile tea. She looked so small, so fragile, wrapped in a knitted shawl.

"Mom," I said gently, kneeling beside her. "I need you to tell me the truth. What did Ryan and Vanessa do to you?"

My mother looked away, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. "I was so stupid, Emmy. I wanted to protect his memory. I didn't want the family to be ruined."

"Whose memory, Mom?"

She reached into her sewing basket and pulled out a faded manila envelope, handing it to me with a trembling hand.

I opened it. Inside were old financial documents from Carter Freight Solutions dating back thirty years, to when our father was still running the company. They were tax evasion records. Heavy, systematic, illegal. Our father, whom we had worshipped as a saint, had built the foundation of his empire on dirty money.

"Vanessa found them in the attic last year," my mother whispered, her voice cracking. "She told me that if I didn't sign over my personal shares of the company to her and Ryan, she would leak them to the IRS and the press. She said she would destroy Daniel’s reputation. She said she would make sure Daniel went to federal prison for his father's crimes."

I closed my eyes, the sheer scale of the betrayal washing over me.

They had blackmailed my grieving, elderly mother. They had threatened to destroy my brother's life’s work using the sins of our dead father.

"Daniel found out," I realized out loud. "That's why he was looking into their accounts. He wasn't just trying to save the company—he was trying to save you."

"He told me he would handle it," my mother sobbed. "He told me not to worry. And then... and then he died."

"He didn't just die, Mom," I said, hugging her tightly. "They killed him. But they are not going to win."

My phone rang. It was Marcus.

"Emily, we have a problem," Marcus said, his voice urgent. "The FBI just raided Vanessa’s penthouse in Gold Coast. But she wasn't there."

"What do you mean she wasn't there?"

"Ryan and Vanessa tipped each other off. Vanessa’s passport is gone, and her primary bank accounts were cleared out an hour ago. They’re running, Emily. And they have a private jet registered under Apex Transit chartered out of a private airfield in Kenosha, Wisconsin."

"When does the flight leave?" I asked, my blood turning to ice.

"In forty minutes."

"I'm ten minutes away from the highway," I said, standing up and grabbing my keys. "I can make it to Kenosha."

"Don't do anything stupid, Emily! Wait for the police!" Marcus shouted through the phone.

"They killed my brother, Marcus," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "They are not getting away."

I hung up, kissed my mother’s forehead, and ran to my car.
