CHAPTER 1 — The Night Everyone Believed His Lie

The last thing Valeria Serrano heard before everything went dark was her husband’s laughter.

Not anger.

Not regret.

Laughter.

A cold, careless laugh that echoed through the luxurious bathroom of the Alcázar family mansion in Zapopan.

—You always make that little sound right before you break.

Mauricio Alcázar smiled as if he had just told the funniest joke in the world.

Valeria lay on the marble floor, unable to move, her vision fading in and out.

For three years, she had learned the terrible truth about the man she married.

Mauricio wasn’t a husband who lost control during arguments.

He wasn’t a man who apologized afterward and cried because he regretted his actions.

No.

Mauricio hurt her because he enjoyed it.

Pain was his entertainment.

Fear was his favorite emotion to create.

And Valeria was the person he had chosen to destroy.

At first, everyone thought Mauricio Alcázar was the perfect husband.

The son of a wealthy family.

A successful businessman.

A respected philanthropist.

The man whose face appeared on magazine covers beside smiling children, holding donation checks from the Alcázar Foundation.

People called him:

“The golden son of Jalisco.”

But behind the gates of his mansion, there was another Mauricio.

A man nobody saw.

A man who whispered cruel words while tightening his grip around his wife’s wrist.

A man who smiled when she cried.

A man who believed money could erase every crime.

The first time Mauricio hit her, Valeria convinced herself it was a mistake.

They had been married only six months.

She had questioned him about money disappearing from one of his companies.

A normal question.

A wife asking about her husband’s business.

But Mauricio’s face changed.

The charming smile disappeared.

The kindness vanished.

And for the first time, Valeria saw the monster hidden behind the expensive suits.

Afterward, he bought her a diamond necklace.

He kissed her forehead.

And he said:

—You made me angry, my love. But I forgive you.

That was the moment Valeria realized something terrifying.

Mauricio wasn’t sorry.

He believed she deserved it.

Over time, the violence became a routine.

Never in front of people.

Never where cameras could see.

Mauricio was too intelligent for that.

He knew exactly how to protect his reputation.

A bruise on her shoulder?

She fell against a door.

A cut on her lip?

She burned herself cooking.

A swollen eye?

She had allergies.

And everyone believed him.

Because people wanted to believe the handsome billionaire could never be cruel.

But Valeria Serrano had a secret.

Before becoming Mauricio’s wife, she had spent eight years working as a forensic auditor for the Jalisco Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

She knew how criminals thought.

She knew how powerful people hid evidence.

She knew every crime left a trace.

Mauricio forced her to quit after their wedding.

He laughed when she told him she loved her career.

—An Alcázar woman doesn’t spend her days digging through dirty documents.

He took away her job.

Her independence.

Her friends.

Her freedom.

But he made one mistake.

He underestimated her mind.

Behind a row of old cookbooks in the mansion kitchen was a forgotten tablet.

Mauricio never noticed it.

Inside that tablet was an encrypted cloud account.

And inside that account was everything.

Photos.

Bank records.

Messages.

Dates.

Names.

Evidence.

For eighteen months, Valeria had quietly built a case against her own husband.

She didn’t want revenge.

She wanted survival.

Because she knew one thing:

If she attacked too soon, Mauricio would destroy her before anyone believed her.

But Mauricio had his own weakness.

His ego.

The man who controlled millions of pesos had one disgusting obsession.

He liked proof of his power.

He recorded some of the moments when he hurt Valeria.

Not because he feared being caught.

Because he enjoyed watching her helpless face afterward.

He stored the videos inside a hidden folder on his phone.

A folder disguised as old family pictures.

He thought nobody knew the password.

He was wrong.

Valeria knew.

That night started like any other.

A quiet dinner.

Soft music.

A bottle of expensive tequila.

Mauricio talking about his upcoming charity event.

Valeria barely spoke.

She had learned silence kept her alive.

But then Mauricio received a message.

His expression changed.

A nervous expression.

A rare one.

Valeria noticed.

She always noticed.

—What happened? —she asked.

Mauricio looked at her.

Then smiled.

—Nothing.

But his eyes said something else.

Something was wrong.

Minutes later, he was angry.

Not because of her.

Because someone had discovered something.

Something connected to his foundation.

Something connected to money.

And as always, he needed somewhere to release his frustration.

Valeria became the target.

Again.

The bathroom door closed.

The mansion became silent.

Thirty minutes later…

Valeria woke up on the cold marble floor.

Her body felt broken.

Her head was spinning.

Mauricio was standing above her, cleaning the blood from her face with a towel.

But this time, something was different.

He wasn’t smiling.

He was scared.

Very scared.

He leaned closer.

—Listen carefully.

His voice was low.

—You slipped in the shower.

Valeria stared at him.

Unable to speak.

—You understand?

He grabbed her face gently.

Almost lovingly.

Which made it even more terrifying.

—You fell.

A pause.

—Nothing else happened.

At San Gabriel Hospital, Mauricio transformed himself into the perfect husband.

He carried Valeria through the emergency entrance.

His eyes were filled with fake tears.

—My wife fell in the bathroom.

Doctors rushed toward her.

Nurses praised him for bringing her quickly.

Everyone saw a worried husband.

Nobody saw a criminal.

Until Doctor Julián Cárdenas examined her injuries.

His expression changed.

The bruises were not random.

The marks on her wrists were fingerprints.

The injuries on her ribs were older.

This had happened before.

Many times.

He looked at Mauricio.

—How long has this been happening?

Mauricio froze.

—Excuse me?

The doctor pulled the sheet down slightly.

—A fall doesn’t leave these injuries.

Silence.

Then Mauricio smiled.

A dangerous smile.

—Doctor, I think you’re mistaken.

But the doctor already knew.

He walked outside.

And called the police.

A security guard stood outside Valeria’s room.

Mauricio entered one last time.

His calm mask returned.

He leaned close to her ear.

His voice was almost a whisper.

—If you tell them anything, I will destroy you.

Valeria didn’t move.

—The house?

He smiled.

—I’ll take it.

—The money?

—I’ll take it.

—Your reputation?

A pause.

—I’ll make sure everyone thinks you’re crazy.

Then Mauricio walked toward the door.

But before he left…

Valeria opened her eyes.

Fully.

For the first time that night.

Mauricio stopped.

Because there was something in her expression he had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

Determination.

When the police arrived, the officer approached her bed.

—Mrs. Alcázar, can you tell us what happened?

Valeria could barely breathe.

Her voice was weak.

But her words were clear.

—Check his phone.

The officer frowned.

—His phone?

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

—And ask his mother about the account of the dead children.

Everyone in the room froze.

The doctor looked confused.

The officer looked at Mauricio.

And Mauricio’s face suddenly lost all color.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

The one secret he had buried for years.

The secret that could destroy not only him…

But the entire Alcázar family.

May you like
