CHAPTER 4 — The Mother Who Sold the Truth

For the first time in eighteen months…

Valeria Serrano felt something stronger than fear.

Confusion.

Because Beatriz Alcázar had just said the one sentence Valeria never expected to hear.

"Ask your mother why she helped us."

The hospital room became silent.

Even Mauricio looked shocked.

—My mother?

Valeria whispered.

Beatriz smiled.

A cold, victorious smile.

—Yes.

She looked directly at Valeria.

—You spent years searching for the person who destroyed your family…

A pause.

—But you never looked at the woman sitting at your dinner table.

Valeria felt the world around her disappear.

Her mother?

Her mother, Rosa Serrano?

The woman who raised her alone after her father disappeared?

The woman who cried every anniversary of Arturo Serrano’s disappearance?

The woman who always told her:

"Your father loved you more than anything."

No.

It couldn’t be true.

Beatriz was lying.

She had to be.

Detective Molina noticed Valeria’s expression change.

—Mrs. Serrano, do you know what she is talking about?

Valeria didn’t answer.

Because suddenly memories started returning.

Small details she had ignored.

Things that never made sense.

Her mother refusing to talk about her father’s investigation.

Her mother becoming nervous whenever the Alcázar name appeared on television.

Her mother throwing away old newspapers from Arturo’s office.

And one sentence she remembered from childhood:

"Some truths are too dangerous to discover."

At the time, Valeria thought it was because her mother was afraid.

Now…

she wasn’t sure.

Mauricio looked at his mother.

—Is this true?

Beatriz didn’t respond.

—Mother, answer me.

Her eyes moved toward him.

And what she said destroyed whatever was left of their relationship.

—You were never supposed to know about this.

Mauricio stepped back.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was hurt.

For the first time, he realized something.

His entire life had been built on secrets.

Twenty years earlier…

Before Mauricio became the face of the Alcázar empire…

Before the luxury mansions and charity events…

There was a different story.

Arturo Serrano was a journalist who discovered that the Alcázar Foundation was not created only to help children.

It was created to hide money.

Millions moved through fake programs.

Fake medical projects.

Fake donations.

But Arturo found something worse.

The foundation wasn’t just stealing money.

It was covering up disappearances.

Children from poor communities were being used as numbers in financial reports.

When the money was transferred…

their names disappeared.

Their lives disappeared.

Their stories disappeared.

Arturo collected evidence.

Thousands of documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

Names.

He was preparing the biggest investigation of his career.

Then one night…

he vanished.

The official story was simple.

Arturo left his family.

He abandoned his wife and daughter.

People believed it.

Because powerful people always create the first version of the truth.

But the real story was different.

Arturo had trusted someone.

Someone close.

Someone who knew where he kept his evidence.

Someone who knew his schedule.

Someone who knew exactly when he would be alone.

His wife.

Rosa Serrano.

Valeria felt tears forming.

—No…

She whispered.

Beatriz watched her carefully.

—Your mother was desperate.

—Stop lying.

Valeria’s voice became stronger.

—You’re trying to save yourself.

Beatriz shook her head.

—No.

A pause.

—I’m finally telling you what happened.

The hospital doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Her face full of regret.

Rosa Serrano.

Valeria’s mother.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Valeria looked at her.

And the pain in her eyes was worse than any bruise Mauricio had caused.

—Tell me it’s not true.

Rosa lowered her head.

That was enough.

Valeria’s breathing became unstable.

—Mom…

A word full of pain.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Pain.

—Tell me you didn’t help them.

Rosa closed her eyes.

And whispered:

—I didn’t know what they would do.

The room froze.

Mauricio laughed bitterly.

A broken laugh.

—You people are unbelievable.

Everyone looked at him.

The man who had caused so much pain was now watching his own family collapse.

He looked at his mother.

Then at Rosa.

—All these years…

He shook his head.

—You all knew.

Rosa walked closer to Valeria’s bed.

—Your father was going to expose them.

Valeria looked at her.

—And you stopped him.

Tears filled Rosa’s eyes.

—I tried to protect you.

Valeria’s expression hardened.

—By betraying him?

Rosa couldn’t answer.

Because there was no excuse.

Only a terrible truth.

Twenty years ago, Rosa had received a visit from Beatriz Alcázar.

She came with a warning.

Not a threat.

Something worse.

A promise.

She told Rosa:

"Your husband will disappear. Your daughter will grow up without a father. Unless you help us."

Rosa was given a choice.

Protect Arturo…

or protect Valeria.

And she made the decision she would regret forever.

But Beatriz had lied.

She didn’t protect Arturo.

She destroyed him.

The detective stepped forward.

—Where is Arturo Serrano now?

Nobody answered.

Until Rosa slowly reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

Sealed.

She handed it to Valeria.

—Your father left this for you.

Valeria stared at it.

—Why didn’t you give it to me before?

Rosa began crying.

—Because I was afraid of what you would discover.

Valeria opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Only a few lines.

But the first sentence made her blood run cold.

"My dear Valeria, if you are reading this, it means the Alcázars finally found you."

Her hands started shaking.

She continued reading.

"Your mother did what she did because she believed she was saving your life. But she doesn’t know the truth."

A tear fell onto the paper.

Then came the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

"The person who ordered my disappearance was not Beatriz Alcázar."

Valeria stopped breathing.

Everyone stared.

The detective leaned closer.

—Who was it?

Valeria looked at the last line.

Her face turned pale.

Because the name written there…

was impossible.

"Mauricio Alcázar."

The room exploded into silence.

Mauricio stepped back.

—That’s impossible.

Valeria looked at him.

Her voice trembled.

—You were involved.

Mauricio shook his head.

—No.

But then Rosa whispered something that made everyone turn.

—He was only seventeen years old…

A pause.

—But he was already capable of destroying people.

Mauricio’s entire body froze.

Because there was something nobody knew.

Something even he had forgotten.

The disappearance of Arturo Serrano was not his first crime.

May you like

It was the first crime he got away with.
