CHAPTER 3 — The Secret Buried Beneath the Alcázar Empire

The hospital hallway had never felt so silent.

Not even the sound of footsteps could break the tension.

Everyone was looking at one person.

Beatriz Alcázar.

The woman who had spent forty years building one of the most respected families in Jalisco.

The woman who appeared on magazine covers.

The woman politicians greeted with smiles.

The woman who always said:

"An Alcázar never falls."

But tonight…

she looked terrified.

Because she knew Valeria had found the one thing that could bring down everything.

Mauricio stared at his mother.

For the first time in his life, he saw fear in her eyes.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

—Mother… what account is she talking about?

Beatriz said nothing.

Her silence was an answer.

And Mauricio hated that.

Because Mauricio Alcázar had always believed he knew everything.

He knew his companies.

He knew his employees.

He knew his enemies.

But he realized something terrifying.

There was a part of his own family he had never been allowed to see.

Detective Molina stepped forward.

—Mrs. Alcázar, perhaps you can explain why your son’s wife believes you are connected to missing children.

Beatriz looked at him with cold confidence.

The old Beatriz returned.

The woman who could manipulate a room with a single sentence.

—This is ridiculous. My daughter-in-law is injured and confused.

Valeria laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

Everyone looked at her.

—That’s exactly what you said you would do.

Beatriz narrowed her eyes.

—Excuse me?

Valeria looked at Mauricio.

—Make me look crazy.

Then she looked back at Beatriz.

—Just like you taught him.

The words hit Mauricio harder than any accusation.

Because suddenly he remembered something.

A conversation from three years ago.

The day after his first attack on Valeria.

He had gone to his mother.

He expected anger.

Instead, Beatriz had calmly poured herself coffee.

And she said:

—Never leave evidence.

That was all.

Not:

"How could you hurt your wife?"

Not:

"Get help."

Only:

"Never leave evidence."

Mauricio slowly looked at his mother.

—You knew?

Beatriz remained silent.

—You knew what I was doing?

Her expression hardened.

—Lower your voice.

But Mauricio didn’t move.

For the first time, he wasn’t afraid of her.

—You knew.

A pause.

—You knew everything.

Valeria watched them carefully.

This was the moment she had waited for.

Because Mauricio was dangerous.

But Beatriz was worse.

Mauricio acted because he enjoyed power.

Beatriz acted because she understood it.

She didn’t need to raise her voice.

She destroyed people quietly.

Eighteen months earlier…

Before anyone knew about the evidence…

Valeria had discovered something strange.

A payment inside the Alcázar Foundation records.

The amount was small.

Only 50,000 pesos.

But the description caught her attention.

"Project Hope — Final Compensation."

At first, she thought it was another charity payment.

But then she checked the name attached.

A child.

A six-year-old boy.

Officially listed as deceased.

Cause of death:

Accidental drowning.

The problem?

The child had never lived near water.

Valeria investigated deeper.

One child became three.

Three became twelve.

Twelve became twenty-seven.

Different towns.

Different dates.

Different official explanations.

But one thing connected them all.

Every child was connected to a foundation program controlled by the Alcázar family.

Then she found the account.

A hidden financial record.

Not under the foundation.

Not under Mauricio’s companies.

Under Beatriz Alcázar’s private trust.

The transfers were disguised.

Payments to doctors.

Payments to officials.

Payments to people who made problems disappear.

But the worst discovery was not the money.

It was a name.

A name Valeria recognized.

A name she never expected to see.

Her own father.

Twenty years earlier, Valeria’s father, Arturo Serrano, had been a journalist investigating corruption.

He disappeared after promising his daughter:

"If something happens to me, never trust powerful people who look perfect."

Everyone believed he had abandoned his family.

Valeria grew up believing that too.

Until she found a document.

A document with his signature.

A document proving he had been investigating the Alcázars.

The truth was unbearable.

Her father had not left.

He had been trying to expose them.

And the last person who saw him alive…

was Beatriz Alcázar.

Back in the hospital, Valeria reached into her bag.

The police officer looked surprised.

She pulled out a small black notebook.

Old.

Damaged.

But carefully protected.

—This belonged to my father.

The room went quiet.

Beatriz’s face changed.

For the first time…

she looked genuinely afraid.

—Where did you get that?

Valeria stared at her.

—From the place where you thought nobody would ever look.

Mauricio stepped closer.

—What does my family have to do with your father?

Valeria looked at him.

And her answer destroyed him.

—Your mother knows.

Beatriz immediately interrupted.

—Enough.

Her voice was sharp.

Everyone turned.

She was no longer pretending.

—You have no idea what you are playing with.

Valeria smiled weakly.

—Actually…

She looked at Detective Molina.

—I know exactly.

Then Valeria opened her phone.

A single audio file appeared.

Recorded eighteen months earlier.

She pressed play.

A woman’s voice filled the hospital room.

A voice everyone recognized.

Beatriz Alcázar.

The recording was short.

Only eleven seconds.

But it changed everything.

"The children were never supposed to survive long enough to become a problem."

Silence.

Nobody breathed.

Mauricio looked at his mother.

His face was empty.

Broken.

—Mother…

Beatriz closed her eyes.

She knew.

The game was over.

But then something unexpected happened.

Beatriz smiled.

Not nervously.

Not desperately.

She smiled confidently.

And she looked at Valeria.

—You think you won?

Valeria frowned.

Beatriz stepped closer.

—You still don’t understand.

A pause.

—Your father wasn’t the only person who investigated us.

The detective looked confused.

—What does that mean?

Beatriz looked directly at Valeria.

And whispered:

—Ask your mother why she helped us.

Valeria froze.

Her heart stopped.

Because there was one person she had never questioned.

One person she trusted completely.

May you like

Her mother.
