CHAPTER 2 — The Phone That Could Destroy a Dynasty

The emergency room fell into complete silence.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not the doctor.

Not the police officer.

Not even Mauricio Alcázar.

Because everyone was trying to understand one thing:

What did Valeria mean by “the account of the dead children”?

The phrase sounded impossible.

Crazy.

Like something a traumatized woman would say after a terrible accident.

That was exactly what Mauricio wanted them to believe.

He quickly recovered his expression.

The worried husband returned.

The concerned businessman.

The innocent man.

He stepped forward.

—Officer, my wife is confused. She suffered a serious fall. The medication and the shock are affecting her memory.

The police officer looked at him carefully.

—She specifically mentioned your phone.

Mauricio laughed softly.

A fake laugh.

—My phone? Really?

He looked toward Valeria with a sad expression.

—My wife has been under a lot of stress lately.

Stress.

That was always his favorite weapon.

Making people doubt her.

Making people think she was unstable.

But this time, Valeria wasn’t alone.

Detective Andrés Molina had spent twenty years investigating powerful families.

He knew something most people didn’t.

Rich people rarely got caught because they committed crimes.

They got caught because they believed they were untouchable.

He looked at Mauricio.

—Mr. Alcázar, we need to ask you a few questions.

Mauricio smiled.

—Of course.

—And we will need access to your phone.

The smile disappeared for half a second.

Only half a second.

But Valeria noticed.

She always noticed.

Inside Mauricio’s head, panic started growing.

The phone.

The videos.

The hidden files.

The messages.

Everything was there.

For years, he had protected himself.

He paid lawyers before he needed them.

He controlled newspapers.

He donated money to politicians.

He built a perfect image.

But the one thing he never controlled…

was his own arrogance.

While the police waited, Mauricio stepped away and sent a message.

“Destroy everything. Immediately.”

The person who received it was his younger brother, Sebastián Alcázar.

The family’s financial genius.

The man who had helped hide every suspicious transaction for the last decade.

A few seconds later, the answer came.

“I already know. But there is a problem.”

Mauricio’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“What problem?”

The response arrived.

“The cloud backup already synchronized.”

Mauricio froze.

Across the city, inside a small apartment, a woman stared at a laptop screen.

Her name was Elena Vargas.

She had worked for the Alcázar family foundation for seven years.

And she was the person who had helped Valeria create the backup system.

Because Elena knew something too.

The Alcázar Foundation was not what everyone believed.

The charity dinners.

The donations.

The smiling photos.

It was all a performance.

Behind the scenes was a financial operation built on lies.

Three years earlier, Elena had discovered strange payments.

Large amounts of money leaving the foundation.

Millions supposedly used to help abandoned children.

But the names on the documents didn’t exist.

The orphanages didn’t exist.

The medical programs didn’t exist.

Only the money existed.

And then something worse happened.

Several children connected to one of the foundation’s “projects” disappeared from official records.

Their deaths were reported as accidents.

No investigation.

No questions.

Because the Alcázar family had connections everywhere.

Elena tried to report it.

Two days later, she lost her job.

One week later, someone broke into her apartment.

They didn’t steal money.

They only searched through her documents.

That was when she understood.

The Alcázar family wasn’t hiding a mistake.

They were hiding a crime.

Back at the hospital, Detective Molina looked at Mauricio.

—Mr. Alcázar, where is your phone?

Mauricio reached into his pocket.

Then stopped.

Because the screen was black.

The battery was dead.

A perfect excuse.

Or so he thought.

—I must have forgotten to charge it.

The detective held out his hand.

—We can charge it.

Mauricio’s heart started beating faster.

But before he could answer…

Valeria spoke.

Her voice was weak.

But everyone heard it.

—The password is not his birthday.

Mauricio turned slowly.

Valeria looked directly at him.

—It’s his mother’s name… followed by the date of the first child who died.

The room became colder.

Mauricio stared at her.

Impossible.

How could she know?

The detective looked at him.

—Mrs. Alcázar, how do you know that?

Valeria closed her eyes for a moment.

Because telling the truth meant opening wounds she had buried for years.

But she had waited long enough.

—Because I spent eighteen months collecting evidence.

Mauricio’s face changed.

—You…

The word came out almost like a whisper.

"You planned this."

Valeria looked at him.

For the first time in three years…

she wasn’t afraid.

—No, Mauricio.

A pause.

—I survived you.

The police unlocked his phone.

The first thing they found was not the videos.

Not the financial documents.

Not the secret accounts.

It was a folder named:

“Family Memories.”

Inside were hundreds of photos.

Family vacations.

Birthday celebrations.

Charity events.

But hidden beneath them…

were files that made the detective’s expression change.

Videos.

Dozens of them.

Valeria’s suffering.

Mauricio’s voice.

His laughter.

His cruelty.

The evidence he created because he believed he was powerful.

Mauricio finally understood.

The monster had documented his own downfall.

The detective looked at him.

—Mr. Alcázar, you are under investigation for domestic violence, evidence tampering, fraud, and possible homicide.

For the first time in years…

Mauricio Alcázar had nothing to say.

But then his mother arrived.

Beatriz Alcázar.

The woman who had built the family empire.

She walked into the hospital wearing designer clothes and a cold expression.

Everyone expected her to defend her son.

After all…

the Alcázars protected their own.

She approached Mauricio.

Looked at him.

And slapped him.

Hard.

Everyone froze.

Then she whispered:

—You idiot.

Mauricio stared at her.

—Mother?

Her eyes filled with anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

—Do you know what you have done?

Mauricio frowned.

—What are you talking about?

Beatriz looked toward Valeria.

And for the first time…

the most powerful woman in the Alcázar family looked terrified.

—She found the account.

Silence.

Then Valeria spoke:

—The account that proves what happened to the children.

Mauricio’s face went pale.

Because there was one thing he never knew.

One thing his mother had hidden from him.

Valeria didn’t just have evidence against him.

She had evidence against the entire Alcázar bloodline.
