Chapter 1 - THE FRENCH LULLABY’S BLOOD-STAINED SECRETS

The French lullaby didn’t just sound beautiful in the cold, cavernous silence of Robert Mitchell’s $40 million Manhattan penthouse. It sounded like a death warrant.
Robert stood frozen outside Lily’s bedroom door, the mahogany wood feeling ice-cold against his palm. He had spent his entire life analyzing risks, reading between the lines of complex financial fraud, and spotting traps before they snapped shut. But as Lily’s fragile, perfect French syllables drifted through the crack of the door, a primal instinct screamed inside his chest.
This wasn’t the song of a gas-station abandonment.
He quietly pushed the door open. The city lights from the floor-to-ceiling windows cast long, skeletal shadows across the room. Lily was sitting upright in the massive plush bed, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. She wasn't looking at him; her eyes were fixed on the worn backpack she refused to leave behind. She was clutching a small, silver locket that Robert hadn't noticed before—a piece of jewelry she must have hidden inside the lining of her bag.
"Lily?" Robert’s voice was a low, soothing anchor.
The singing stopped instantly. Lily flinched, shoving the locket deep beneath her pillow, her blue eyes wide with a terrifying, adult-like vigilance.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Did I make too much noise? Please don't send me back. I can be quiet. I can be invisible."
Robert’s heart wrenched. He walked over slowly, dropping to one knee beside the bed, deliberately lowering his towering 6'2" frame to her level. "You don't ever have to be invisible here, Lily. I promised you that. But that song... where did you learn it?"
Lily swallowed hard, her small fingers twisting the bedsheets. "My maman. She told me it was a secret song. She said if I ever got lost, I should only sing it when I was completely alone, because if the 'Grey Men' heard it, they would find me."
The Grey Men.
Before Robert could press further, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket. It was an encrypted line. Only three people had this number. He stepped out into the hallway and answered.
"Rob, we have a catastrophic problem," James’s voice came through, jagged with panic. The calm, calculated COO sounded like he was running for his life. "The $250 million acquisition we just closed this morning? The target company, Durand Logistics? It’s a ghost. The assets are being liquidated as we speak, routed through shell companies in Marseille, France. Someone used us to launder a massive quarter-billion-dollar black-market fund."
Robert’s jaw tightened. "That’s impossible. We did six months of forensic auditing. Who bypassed our compliance?"
"We don't know," James gasped, the sound of screeching tires audible in the background. "But Rob, it gets worse. I dug into the deep ledger—the hidden registry of Durand Logistics. The original founder who went missing three years ago? His name was Jean-Luc Durand. He died in a suspicious car crash in France, but his wife and daughter fled to America. Rob... the daughter's name was Liliane Durand."
Robert’s blood turned to ice. He looked through the glass pane of the bedroom door at the little girl sitting on the bed.
"James, description of the daughter. Now," Robert commanded, his voice deadly quiet.
"Blonde hair, blue eyes, missing since she was five years old. Rob, if whoever stole that money finds out we are looking into the Durand family, we are dead men. They have eyes everywhere. They are called—"
The call abruptly cut out.
Not a dropped signal. A hard, military-grade jam.
Suddenly, the lights in Robert’s penthouse flickered and died. The entire skyline of Manhattan seemed to fade into a terrifying darkness as the backup generators failed to kick in. Down on the street, the screech of a black SUV’s tires echoed up to the penthouse.

Robert spun around, rushing into Lily's room. He grabbed her backpack and pulled her into his arms, running toward his private elevator. But before the doors could open, the heavy steel cables groaned. The elevator was being remotely recalled to the lobby.
They were trapped sixty stories in the air. And the hunters had just arrived.
