Chapter 2 - THE 60TH FLOOR AMBUSH: TRUST NO ONE

BOOM.
The sound of the heavy fire-escape doors bursting open echoed through the concrete stairwell just outside the penthouse. Heavy, synchronized tactical footsteps began to flood the upper floor. These weren't street thugs. These were professional mercenaries, moving with terrifying, silent efficiency.
"Lily, look at me," Robert whispered fiercely, holding her by her fragile shoulders in the pitch black of the hallway. "Do you trust me?"
Lily looked at him, her eyes reflecting the faint moonlight. For a girl who had spent three years running from the foster system, survival was an instinct. She nodded slowly. "They found me, didn't they?"
"Not yet," Robert gritted out.
He didn't built a billion-dollar empire by being a victim. He knew every square inch of this building. He bypassed the main hallway and led Lily into the master suite, pushing open a hidden panel behind his walk-in closet. It was a maintenance shaft that led to the building's mechanical floor—a space completely off the grid and unlisted on public blueprints.
They scrambled inside just as the glass walls of his living room shattered into a million pieces. Flashbang grenades detonated, filling the penthouse with blinding light and deafening noise.
Through the slats of the hidden ventilation shaft, Robert watched in absolute silence. Five men dressed in matte-black tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, swept the penthouse. They moved with military precision. One of them stepped forward, pulling off his night-vision goggles.
Robert’s breath caught in his throat.
It was James. His COO. His closest friend for fifteen years.
James walked over to the kitchen island, pouring himself a glass of Robert’s expensive scotch. He pulled out a radio. "The bird has flown. Mitchell isn't here, and neither is the asset. Check the security feeds. Someone tipped him off."
A voice crackled over James's radio, distorted but chillingly clear: "He couldn't have gone far. The perimeter is locked down. Find the girl. The Board wants the Durand encryption key, and it's hidden in that child's memories. If Mitchell gets in the way, eliminate him."
Robert felt a cold fury boil in his veins. James had set him up. The $250 million acquisition wasn't a mistake; it was a trap designed to drain Mitchell Investments and force Robert into a corner where they could take everything—including Lily.
Lily whimpered softly next to him. Robert immediately clamped his hand over her mouth, pulling her close against his chest. He could feel her heart hammering like a trapped bird. He leaned down, whispering directly into her ear. "I've got you. I won't let them touch you."
Using the pitch-black darkness of the maintenance shaft, Robert guided Lily down three flights of stairs to the building's commercial garage. He didn't dare go for his high-profile town car. Instead, he approached a dusty, unremarkable 2018 Honda Civic parked in the corner—a vehicle he kept registered under a dead corporation's name for absolute emergencies.
He threw Lily into the backseat and jumped into the driver's seat, hotwiring the car within seconds. As the engine roared to life, the garage doors began to slam shut electronically. James’s men were locking down the exits.
"Hold on!" Robert shouted.
He slammed his foot on the gas. The car rocketed forward, tires screaming against the concrete. The heavy steel garage gate was halfway down. Robert didn't brake. The Honda smashed through the bottom of the gate, sparks flying wildly into the night air as the roof of the car scraped violently against the iron.
They burst onto the chaotic streets of Manhattan, the sound of police sirens wailing in the distance. But Robert knew the police wouldn't save them. In New York, money bought power, and whoever was chasing Lily had more money than God.
As they sped over the Brooklyn Bridge, Lily crawled into the front passenger seat. She pulled the silver locket out from her pocket and handed it to Robert.

"Maman said if I ever found someone I could trust, I should give them this," Lily said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "She said it contains the coordinates to the graveyard of secrets."
Robert opened the locket. There was no photo inside. Instead, laser-etched onto the microscopic surface of the silver, was a series of coordinates and a line of code: ALPHA-OMÉGA-771.
