Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF THE RAVEN

The sound of gunshots filled the small diner, deafening and brutal. Bullets shredded the vinyl booths, blew out the glowing neon sign, and shattered every piece of glassware on the shelves. Shards of glass rained down like ice.

Mikhail held me pinned beneath him on the cold floor. His heavy body acted as an impenetrable shield. I could feel the intense heat radiating from him, the sharp scent of gunpowder filling the air, and the deep, rhythmic beat of his heart against my back.

"Stay down," he commanded in my ear, his voice deadly calm despite the chaos.

Within seconds, the gunshots ceased. Mikhail’s bodyguards had executed the attackers with terrifying efficiency. The entire encounter had lasted less than fifteen seconds.

Mikhail stood up smoothly, adjusting his tie as if nothing had happened. He reached down and offered me his hand. My whole body was trembling violently, but I took it. He pulled me up effortlessly.

"Are you harmed?" he asked, scanning my face.

"I... I don't think so..." I gasped for air, looking around in utter horror.

My diner was completely destroyed. The mirrors were shattered, bullet holes peppered the walls, and three dead men lay pooled in blood near the kitchen door. My dream, my father’s legacy, was in ruins.

Mikhail stepped over to one of the fallen gunmen, using the tip of his leather boot to flip the corpse over. He stared at a dark tattoo inked onto the man's neck—a crude image of a two-headed raven.

Mikhail’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. "The Raven Syndicate," he whispered darkely. "They followed Misha here. They meant to take him... or execute him in front of me."

He turned back to me. His eyes were no longer cold; they were blazing with a dark, apocalyptic fury. "They saw your face, Elena. They know you protected my son. By saving Misha, you have put yourself directly in the crosshairs of the most ruthless cartel on the East Coast."

"What?" My breath hitched. "No... no, I have nothing to do with your mafia wars! I just run a diner!"

"You did run a diner," Mikhail corrected smoothly, pointing toward the blood-stained counter and bullet-riddled walls. "Now, this place is a crime scene. And if you stay here tonight, you will be dead before sunrise. The Ravens do not leave loose ends."

Outside, police sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting through the heavy rain.

"We leave. Now," Mikhail ordered, grabbing my wrist.

"I can't just leave!" I cried out, pulling back. "My cook, Leo—"

"My men will secure your cook and compensate him generously," Mikhail snapped, dragging me toward the front exit. "Right now, your survival depends entirely on me."

Before I could protest further, he shoved me into the back seat of the bulletproof black SUV. Misha was already sitting there, clutching a plush teddy bear, tears streaming down his tiny face.

"Elena!" Misha cried out, throwing his small arms around my waist the moment I sat down. "You came!"

My anger instantly melted. I wrapped my arms around the frightened boy, holding him tight. "I'm here, sweetie. It's okay."

Mikhail slid into the front passenger seat, slamming the door. The convoy tore away from the curb, leaving the burning, broken remnants of my life behind in the rear-view mirror.

Twenty minutes later, the SUVs pulled through massive iron gates and ascended a winding driveway lined with towering pine trees. At the top stood a massive, fortress-like stone estate overlooking Lake Michigan.

Mikhail opened my door and guided Misha and me inside. The mansion was breathtaking—marble floors, soaring ceilings, and priceless artwork. But it felt more like an armed compound than a home. Armed guards stood at every hallway corner.

"Take Misha to his quarters," Mikhail ordered a elderly housekeeper.

"No! I want Elena to stay with me!" Misha sobbed, holding onto my apron. "Please, Papa!"

Mikhail looked down at his son, his expression softening slightly. He looked at me, his sharp blue eyes assessing every detail of my tired, dirt-streaked face.

"Miss Reyes will stay in the guest wing tonight," Mikhail stated calmly. "She is safe here."

After Misha was tucked into bed, I was led to a luxurious bedroom on the second floor. I washed the grime and blood off my face, feeling completely numb. Everything had changed in a single evening. I had lost my business, my peace, and my safety.

Around 2:00 AM, unable to sleep, I stepped out into the quiet hallway to find a glass of water. As I walked past a pair of heavy mahogany doors, I heard heated voices coming from inside. The door was slightly ajar.

"We checked the security footage from the mall, Boss," a deep voice said from inside the room. "The nanny didn't lose the boy by accident. She was paid off."

"By whom?" Mikhail’s voice was lethal.

"By your brother, Viktor."

My heart stopped in my chest. His own brother?

"Viktor leak Misha's location to the Ravens," the bodyguard continued. "He wanted the boy taken so he could force you to surrender your territory. But there's something else..."

"Speak," Mikhail growled.

"The woman... Elena Reyes. We ran her background check."

I gasped softly, pressing my back against the wall, listening intently.

"And?" Mikhail asked.

May you like

"Her father wasn't just a diner owner, Mikhail. Twenty years ago, he was the top accountant for the Raven Syndicate... and before he died, he hid fifty million dollars of their dirty money. The Ravens didn't follow Misha to that diner by accident tonight... They were looking for her."

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: I stumbled backward in sheer horror, but my foot caught the edge of a heavy bronze pedestal. The vase on top crashed to the marble floor with a shattering roar—and within half a second, the mahogany doors flew open, and Mikhail pulled a silver pistol directly against my forehead!
