Chapter 4 - THE WEB OF LIES

The words hung in the air like a lethal poison. My glass slipped from my hand, crashing against the stone balcony floor and shattering into a hundred pieces. Red wine stained the marble like a pool of fresh blood.

"No..." I gasped, shaking my head violently. "No, no, no! That's impossible! You're lying!"

Mikhail grabbed my shoulders, his grip tight and firm, keeping me anchored. "Look at me, Elena! Look at me!" he ordered sternly. "Thirty years ago, before your father ran away, he took the Grand Master's infant daughter to protect her from the mafia life. He raised you as his own! That means you aren't just an accountant's daughter... you carry the bloodline of the ultimate enemy of my family!"

"I don't care about bloodlines!" I screamed, tears spilling over my cheeks. "I don't care about syndicates, or money, or mafia wars! I am just ELENA! I spent my entire life cooking soups and serving coffee!"

"It doesn't matter what you think you are!" Mikhail barked, his eyes blazing with frustration and something deeper—betrayal. "In our world, blood is everything! My brother Viktor knows this. If he proves to the Raven Syndicate that you are their long-lost heiress, they will unite behind him, crush my empire, and claim everything I own!"

He let go of my shoulders and stepped back, pacing like a caged predator. The romantic tension that had built between us just moments ago was utterly annihilated, replaced by a wall of suspicion and hostility.

"Is that why you were so good to Misha?" Mikhail asked suddenly, his voice turning bitterly cold. "Was it all an act? Did you engineer meeting him at that diner? Did your syndicate send you to infiltrate my life?"

The words felt like a dagger straight to my chest.

"How could you even ask me that?!" I yelled, stepping toward him, my voice cracking with emotional pain. "I gave him my last meal! I shielded him with my body when the guns started shooting! I stayed up with him every night when he had nightmares! You think I planned all of that?!"

Mikhail stared at me, his jaw tight, his chest heaving. He wanted to believe me—I could see the agonizing struggle in his eyes. But a man who built an empire on paranoia couldn't trust easily.

"Until I verify Viktor's claims, you will remain in your room," Mikhail commanded coldly, turning his back on me. "Guards will be posted outside your door. You are not to speak to Misha. You are not to leave."

"Mikhail, please!" I begged, but he walked away without turning back, slamming his office door shut.

That night was a living nightmare. Locked inside my luxurious bedroom, I paced from wall to wall. I felt betrayed by my past, by my late father, and by the man I had foolishly begun to fall in love with. I wasn't a pawn in their evil games. I was just a woman who wanted a simple life.

Around 3:00 AM, the mansion’s emergency alarms suddenly began to blare!

WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH!

Red light flashed through my window. The sound of distant explosions rocked the foundation of the house, followed immediately by heavy automatic gunfire coming from the courtyard.

"They're inside!" shouting resonated through the hallways. "The perimeter is breached!"

I ran to my bedroom door and rattled the handle—it was locked from the outside.

"Help! Let me out!" I screamed, banging my fists against the heavy wood.

Suddenly, a loud gunshot blasted the lock off my door. The door swung open, and a man stepped inside holding a suppressed pistol.

It wasn't Mikhail.

He was a younger man, with Mikhail’s sharp features, but with a cruel, twisted smile and manic eyes.

"Hello, dear sister-in-law... or should I say, Princess of the Ravens?" the man sneered, adjusting his leather gloves.

"Viktor..." I breathed, taking a terrified step backward.

"Mikhail was so busy protecting his precious territory that he never saw this coming," Viktor chuckled, stepping toward me. "My men have overriden the security system. Half of Mikhail's guards are dead, and the rest are pinned down in the basement."

"Where is Misha?!" I demanded, terror seizing my heart. "Where is the boy?!"

"Oh, little Misha? He's safe in my SUV right now," Viktor laughed wickedly. "He made a wonderful bargaining chip. And now, you're coming with me too. Together, your bloodline and my intelligence will destroy Mikhail once and for all."

"I'd rather die!" I shouted, grabbing a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and swinging it with all my strength at his head!

CRACK!

The lamp struck Viktor across the face, sending him stumbling back, bleeding from his cheek. I didn't waste a second—I shoved past him and sprinted into the dark, smoke-filled hallway!

"GET HER!" Viktor roared behind me.

I ran through the chaotic mansion, stepping over fallen bodyguards and dodging spray bullets. My only thought was saving Misha. If Viktor had him in an SUV, I had to get to the garage!

I burst through the side doors leading to the lower parking courtyard. Rain was pouring down furiously. In the center of the driveway sat a heavy armored van, its engine idling.

Through the tinted glass, I saw small hands banging against the window—Misha!

"Misha!" I screamed, running toward the vehicle.

Suddenly, a tall figure stepped out from the shadows near the garage, blocking my path. He raised a shotgun, aiming it directly at my chest.

"End of the line, girl," the Raven mercenary growled.

Before he could pull the trigger, a sleek black car burst through the mansion's side gates at full speed, slamming directly into the mercenary and crushing him against the concrete wall!

The driver's side door flew open. Mikhail stepped out, his shirt covered in blood, holding two assault rifles. His eyes were wild, consumed by pure primal rage.

"GET TO MISHA!" Mikhail screamed at me over the sound of thunder. "NOW!"

CHAPTER 4 HOOK: I ran toward the armored van and yanked the door open—only to freeze in utter terror. Misha was sitting inside, but around his small chest was a black vest glowing with a bright red digital timer counting down: 00:59... 00:58... 00:57!
