Chapter 3 - THE BLOODLINE'S CURSE

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't pull this trigger," Mikhail hissed, the cold steel of the gun barrel pressing hard against the skin between my eyes.

"I... I didn't know!" I cried, tears bursting from my eyes as I raised my hands in submission. "I swear on my life, I didn't know anything about fifty million dollars! My father was just a cook! He died broke! He left me a failing diner with thousands of dollars in debt!"

Mikhail stared down at me, his terrifying blue eyes piercing through my soul, searching for any sign of a lie. The air grew thick with tension as his bodyguard stood behind him, hand resting on his weapon.

Slowly, agonizingly, Mikhail lowered the gun.

"Get up," he commanded harshly.

I scrambled to my feet, my knees trembling so violently I could barely stand. "If my father had fifty million dollars, do you really think I’d be working eighteen-hour shifts frying eggs and scrubbing greasy floors?" I sobbed, my fear turning into raw desperation. "I didn't know who you were! I didn't know who Misha was! I just wanted to feed a hungry child!"

Mikhail stared at me for a long, silent moment. The coldness in his face flickered, replaced by something deep and unreadable.

"Your father, Marcus Reyes, was a clever man," Mikhail said softly, walking toward the grand floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the dark, stormy lake. "He realized the Ravens were going to execute him once he finished laundering their funds. So, he took their money, hid it, and faked his background, hiding in plain sight as a humble diner owner in Chicago. He protected you by keeping you completely in the dark."

"Then why now?" I choked out. "Why target me now?"

"Because your father died six months ago," Mikhail turned back to face me. "And according to Raven protocol, the secret to his hidden accounts transfers to his only living heir. You."

I sank into a nearby velvet chair, burying my face in my hands. My entire life had been a lie. The hardworking, quiet man who raised me was a high-level mob accountant, and now his dangerous past was hunting me down.

"So what happens to me?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "Are you going to kill me? Or hand me over to them?"

Mikhail walked over and knelt down in front of my chair. It was an astonishing gesture for a man of his power. He looked directly into my eyes, his voice low and firm.

"I execute my enemies, Elena. I do not kill innocent women who shield my son with their own bodies," he said solemnly. "You saved Misha's life tonight. That puts you under my personal protection. As long as you are in this house, no Raven will ever touch a hair on your head."

"And my diner?"

"Forget the diner," he said sharply. "It’s gone. Your old life is over. From this moment on, you stay here. You are Misha's personal guardian."

Over the next two weeks, my reality transformed completely. I went from flipping burgers to living inside a golden cage. The mansion was an impenetrable fortress, surrounded by armed guards and attack dogs.

Yet, amidst the dark, violent world of the Volkov empire, Misha became my sanctuary. The boy was traumatized, refusing to eat or speak to anyone else. But whenever I was in the room, his eyes lit up. I cooked his meals, read him bedtime stories, and slowly brought the smile back to his small face.

And then there was Mikhail.

The ruthless mafia don was a terrifying man to the world, but around his son—and increasingly, around me—a different man emerged. I watched him sit with Misha for hours, patiently helping him with his homework. I caught him watching me from across the courtyard, his intense gaze warm and protective rather than icy and cold. A dangerous, intoxicating tension began to grow between us.

One evening, while Misha was asleep, Mikhail invited me to his private balcony. The night sky was clear, lit by a brilliant full moon.

"He hasn't laughed like this since his mother died three years ago," Mikhail said quietly, handing me a glass of red wine.

"He's a sweet boy, Mikhail. He just needs love, not just bodyguards," I replied gently, sipping the wine.

Mikhail stepped closer, his physical presence overwhelming. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face. "You brought light back into this dark house, Elena. I don't know how to repay you."

"You don't have to repay me," I murmured, my heart racing for an entirely different reason now.

His face drifted closer to mine, his thumb softly tracing my lower lip. For a brief second, the world stopped. I leaned in, yielding to the magnetic pull between us—

BRRRRRING!

Mikhail’s encrypted phone buzzed sharply on the table. The moment was shattered.

He picked up the phone, listening in absolute silence. As he listened, his face transformed back into the terrifying mask of the underworld leader.

"Are you sure?" Mikhail asked coldness dripping from his voice.

He hung up the phone and looked at me, his eyes darker than I had ever seen them.

"My scouts just intercepted a message from my brother, Viktor," Mikhail said, his voice flat and deadly. "He has made a deal with the Ravens. They aren't going to attack this mansion, Elena."

"Then what are they going to do?" I asked, a sudden dread filling my stomach.

CHAPTER 3 HOOK: Mikhail looked at me with an expression of pure horror. "They didn't come for the money... they came for your DNA. Elena... your father wasn't just their accountant. You are the biological daughter of the Raven Syndicate's Grand Master—which makes you Misha's half-sister!"
